Black History Month

Post by RWStanding »

Black History Month - If those who are promoting this want racial equality [whatever that may be]. This will exacerbate the problem not solve it. There is history and it is not black or white. We might as well have a White History Month and see what uproar that causes.

I predict that eventually Black History Month will be replaced by a History Month for all races according to historical significance.

ideally, I would like to see a less narrow version of history become more widely accepted. ideally, there should be no need for "black history month"

But I am not sure how to actually get there. "black history montyh" might be a necessary stop-gap measure.

I predict we’ll get there via the stop-gap measure in place at present.

This is really a modern vs post-modern (pomo) debate. If you are a modern, you believe that there is one objective history. We may not know it, and we may need to revise or revisit occasionally, but there is an objective history to debate and discuss. There is no "black history", but just "history"... accepting that certain evidence from some communities may have been overlooked and should be considered or reconsidered to evaluate it's relevance.

If you are pomo, there is no "history" but a just a bunch of "histories"... none being any more correct than the other. Throw in intersectionality and now "black" history is the "accepted" history because it is the history of the oppressed. Some would suggest, in order to balance the scales of historical power, that it should be the primary history taught (i.e. a sort of reverse historical discrimination).

If the later sounds crazy to you, it is. If it doesn't sound crazy to you, that means you are crazy.

Unless one is an idiot you believe that the shit that happened is the shit that happened. The problem is that no one can even agree on that. Did the son of god come to Earth? Did 6 million Jews die at the hands of Nazis? Did Neil Armstrong walk on the Moon? Is Elvis dead? If you have an opinion and try and support it, congratulations, you're an historian. Tragically, that is no protection against being an idiot.
