Writing and Social Media
It brings out the worst in me. And at the end of the day, I always feel like I've only contributed to more chaos in the world. So I take breaks from social media. But as soon as I come back, I start ramping up again.

The purpose of a philosophy forum is to pal up with the cool smaht posters, pick on the irredeemable philosophical reprobates, slaughter the fascist morons and religitards and encourage the young revolutionaries to move forward.
None of this involves debating, and telling jokes is preferable to discussion.

You're not including participation in Forums as part of "social media", right?Gary Childress wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2024 7:02 pm It brings out the worst in me. Some of us are old enough to recall when Forums existed and Social Media didn't, so no, I don't equate the two.

I'm old enough to remember more civilized discussions on forums like those on Deja et. al. but since the Web has become more accessible, it tends to bring all kinds. Now, even forums seem generally toxic. I would say there's a rise of informational chaos that might have much to do with it. Basically, all kinds of views come into play now. Conspiracy theories galore.

Well back in the day when the majority of electronic communication was email, folks didn't assume anonymity thus acted more like a face to face encounter.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Sat Feb 10, 2024 1:01 amI'm old enough to remember more civilized discussions on forums like those on Deja et. al. but since the Web has become more accessible, it tends to bring all kinds. Re: Writing and Social Media
I would say a big difference between current social media platforms and these type of venerable forums is in attention. Social media incentivizes ogling only at the latest bit of information in an endless feed of global news, divisive politics and manipulative market forces. Evergreen topics and discussion get buried right away.
Forums offer discussions that go on for weeks, months or even years and they also have to be searched for! None of that secret algorithm adjustment for me, please.
