Re: Is religion guilty of moving the goalposts?
Here is all the proof I need about the hereafter and God's plan. One reason is that I have learned to trust in the competence of other people and not only my own to observe and figure things out. Spinal orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mary Neal dies in a kayak pinned under water for close to 30 minutes. Comf...

That's of course incorrect. The real reason is that they are simply lousy golfers.phyllo wrote:God is merciful.I like that, and by that rational most of humanity should be wiped off the planet.

Re: Is religion guilty of moving the goalposts?
You are not seriously suggesting that God should not have his own ideas about how to treat his own creation and how to introduce himself into human history regardless of your thinking concerning time scales and the mechanics of it? I guess, in that case, the concept of a God is not clear to you and...

Re: Humor
A father buys a lie detector robot that slaps people when they lie. He decides to test it out at dinner one night. The father asks his son what he did that afternoon. The son says, "I did some schoolwork." The robot slaps the son. The son says, "Ok, Ok. I was at a friend's house watch...

Re: Is religion guilty of moving the goalposts?
Guess you missed my point. Religion is what humans do. Humans are constantly changing. Therefore, religion is constantly changing. It would be pretty weird if religion did not change. Yes, it is changing, but on a more fundamental level it is not changing - it is moving the goalposts. Now, in terms...

Re: Is religion guilty of moving the goalposts?
Well, as I prefer to speak in terms of fact, you only have to switch on the news (an independent, unbiased, apolitical news channel) to see that we are tantalisingly close to finding microbes on Mars. This, you may say, does not prove that 'life' exists or existed on other planets, but if you belie...

Re: If you never heard of God, would you ever think of it?
I have a serious problem with the concept of 'god'. Partly because, for me, the concept is undefined, therefore meaningless. However, if God did exist, I would be really mad. Consider my reasons: Predation I hate god! I don't believe in the bastard but I hate him anyway, for blasting away at the ha...

Re: Humor
A catholic priest friend of ours told us this joke. A priest is driving along a highway and is definitely going above the speed limit. Shortly, a cop pulls up from behind and stops him. The cop walks up demanding the papers and seems to smell something. Says he, Father, have you been drinking? The p...

Re: If you never heard of God, would you ever think of it?
Interesting question, especially since my own suggestions in these threads has been that 99.9% (meaning, a very large percentage) of any individual's knowledge comes from outside sources. But, with regard to God, since you are bringing him up, you then must grant him the ability of independent agenc...

Re: Is religion guilty of moving the goalposts?
You are not by any chance picking on religion, are you? As far as I can tell the goal posts are moving for everyone continually, for science, the individual, creation, as well as the academic disciplines and religion. That may be the correct and unbiased way of restating your hypothesis.

Re: Gadzooks!
Ok, the name of the magazine is PhilosophyNow, so it makes sense that it would cover the God inquiry from the philosophic perspective. The usual suspects, theists, atheists, and agnostics are rounded up and asked to provide logical arguments and evidence for their positions and so forth. A philosop...

Re: Does God Exist?
I did like the article by William Lane Craig, especially since I immediately realized that he, like so many others, has managed to once more thoroughly consign atheism to where it belongs, namely, the dust bin of history. Neither theism or atheism have any such power. All such victories, whatever s...

Re: Does God Exist?
Good article, finally philosophy makes some sense. Point #8 could have stressed that the personal experience of God should be verifiable with statistical social science types of experiments with fairly high probability (my estimate 80 to 90%, never 100%) with a reasonable statistical certainty using...
