Skinny dip or Performance Art (or just Exhibitionism?)

Post by tbieter »

"Scully, a longtime performance artist and crusader for an au naturel lifestyle, says it's art -- an extension of his vision to live in a world where we're no longer afraid of our bodies. The Minneapolis Park Police officers who gave Scully a ticket say it's a misdemeanor, punishable by a $125 fine.

"I believe that you have to be the change that you want to see in the world," said Scully, a 6-foot-7 dancer, founder of Patrick's Cabaret http://www.patrickscabaret.org/ and outspoken gay rights activist who frequently performs nude onstage. "I'd like to live in a world in which our relationship to our bodies is much more relaxed and much less fearful.

Scully, who teaches English as a Second Language at the University of Minnesota, has performed as an artist since 1976 and once considered a run for mayor, said he's not a pot-stirrer without reason. You'll never find him strolling naked down Nicollet Mall, for example. His performances are generally limited to the stage, or to the homes of friends or other supporters.

"I'm very conscious of not doing it in a situation where somebody could be offended by somebody being there naked," he said. "I'm very conscious as an artist of the opportunity to inspire or even provoke, but I'm also conscious of not wanting to injure."

No one, he said, was injured or offended by his nude swim that day, he says. The men in the lake warned him out of concern, but went back to their business. Although police noted houses were visible from the shoreline, Scully contends the beach was more than 200 yards from the closest home -- recently built homes, he said, that resulted in more frequent patrols of what was once a secluded

Officer Danny Kagol's report is straightforward: Shortly before 3 p.m. July 10, he and another officer were patrolling Sweeney Beach, located on Twin Lake, the smaller of a pair of lakes between Hwy. 100 and Theodore Wirth Parkway on the Minneapolis-Golden Valley border. They spotted Scully walking toward the shoreline.

"As I continued to observe Scully, I was able to see that he was wearing no clothing. I was able to clearly see his penis as he walked to shore," the report read.

Why do gays tend to want to display their penis in public such as in alleged "performance art" shows or during Gay Pride parades?

Is it more likely than not that Scully's claim of performance art is just a pretext for actual exhibitionism?

I am a heterosexual so I cannot comment on a gay's psychological needs, let alone Skully's, as if anyone could, but I have had a problem with mankind's ridiculous laws against nudity for quite some time.

It's funny that I could find no antonyms for the word 'exhibitionism.' The term only exists due to man's laws, that contradict nature. It is created as a result of mans sickness, such that it really shouldn't exist; it's an illusion born of the contrast of the presupposition of fearful men. It is born of the falsehood that it's natural to want to hide your true self, for fear of what you are, your vulnerability. Covering up is unnatural, thus covering up is the sickness, only for protection from the elements should covering up be considered normal.

I for one would like the freedom of basking in the sunlight on a nice warm day as nature meant it to be, without fear of someone forcing themselves into my natural world, because of their pent up inhibitions born of neuroses and psychoses.

I was a competition swimmer and you are disqualified for entering your fellow competitors lane and impeding their progress in the race. And as such it should be in life. No one is here for your control.

It's the human that believes it's his job to control another's life, that has the problem, as if he could possibly understand the entirety of the universe and beyond, to make such a call for another!

Mans anatomy is truth! Why does any man fear truth?
Man if full of the most absurd fears!

"Paraphilias are problems with controlling impulses that are characterized by recurrent and intense sexual fantasies, urges, and behaviors involving unusual objects, activities, or situations not considered sexually arousing to others. In addition, these objects, activities, or situations often are necessary for the person's sexual functioning. With a paraphilia, the individual's urges and behaviors cause significant distress and/or personal, social, or career problems. Someone with a paraphilia may be referred to as "kinky" or "perverted," and these behaviors may have serious social and legal consequences.

What Behaviors Are Considered Paraphilias?

Exhibitionism ("Flashing")
Exhibitionism is characterized by intense, sexually arousing fantasies, urges, or behaviors involving exposure of the individual's genitals to an unsuspecting stranger. The individual with this problem, sometimes called a "flasher," feels a need to surprise, shock, or impress his victims. The condition usually is limited to the exposure, with no other harmful advances made, although "indecent exposure" is illegal. Actual sexual contact with the victim is rare. However, the person may masturbate while exposing himself or while fantasizing about exposing himself."

If you read the entire newspaper article, you will note that the public display of his penis plays a significant, if not dominant, part in Scully's life. I wonder if he ever performs without displaying his penis? This seems to be an obsession.

Hence, I repeat my questions.

My point was that all this hoopla over Skully is due to the unnatural insistence that people be clothed, as if nudity is wrong. You can quote all the people who are products of the twisted need for clothing that you want, but we, like all animals are born nude.

It's not Skully that has the problem, it's everyone else! His need is a manifestation of the unnaturalness of required clothing. Take away the social mandate to be clothed and his need disappears. This should be simple enough for you to understand.

The requirement for clothing is an unnatural obsession!

But Tom, there would not be this problem if nudity was common place. There would not be the need to control another human being's thoughts by flashing one's naked body about. I think that because it is against the law...it goes against a deep seeded sense of existence of one's rightful place on this earth as a common owner of the natural state of the world in which we all live and share. I think it is man's insistence on controlling his surroundings that makes it possible for exhibitionists to get a thrill out of displaying that which by our natural right...should not be against the law in the first place. Exhibitionists are simply trying to control others out of feeling controlled by society in their own right, imo.

So which came first the chicken or the egg? On a side note...let me ask you this...do you think God is a exhibitionist by allowing us to be born nude? Did he make adam and eve with clothing or did they notice they were naked after they ate the fruit?

Hi AS,

Are you familiar with Karen Finley? (Aha, my memory is still accurate!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Finley I followed her controversial career. Although Senator Jesse Helms was one of my heroes, I disagreed with him on Finley. I thought that she was enormously talented and versatile. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sql8MbkMQ5o http://www.gsu.edu/39172.html http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/ ... mance-art/ I doubt that Scully is as versatile as Finley.

I would appreciate your answers and reasoning regarding my questions.

Tom: Why do gays tend to want to display their penis in public such as in alleged "performance art" shows or during Gay Pride parades?

AS: I am not gay nor have I been to a Gay Pride parade, so I would not know if they do tend to want to display their penis's in public. However, I have been to mardi Gras and I notice alot of people like to get nekkid there. I think it just looked like fun, I didn't get the sense they were doing it to be exhibitionists.

Perhaps Gay pride parades are the same? They do it cause it's fun and jovial time? But I will say this about men....It has been my experience they tend to be very proud of their "junk" and usually are not modest when it comes to whipping it out..i.e. urinals out in the open for all to see vs. women prefer stalls so they have more privacy. So maybe ya'll just like to compare?

Tom:Is it more likely than not that Scully's claim of performance art is just a pretext for actual exhibitionism?

AS: I haven't see his performance art or Ms. Finley's (thanks for the link). But if it is for actual exhibitionism...what is wrong with that? I am just curious? Is it the shock and control issue that is the problem? I don't understand.

When I was a young woman, I was walking to class once and a man drove up to me to ask directions. Politely I stopped and started to answer until I looked down and saw he was nekkid and playing with himself. I didn't feel shock but hurried off anyway because I was alone and didn't know if he intended to harm me physically. Come to think of it...I don't think there is a girl out there who doesn't have a similar story...both of men flashing themselves or actually grabbing our body parts out and out. Maybe it's not a gay thing as much as it is a guy thing. I wonder if most men have similar stories about strange women flashing them or grabbing them on the street?

No! absolutely not. If someone feels comfortable enough with the truth of their existence, then no human should feel like they should punish them for being themselves and then do so, as they would be doing so, due to the projection of their own limitations upon another. Sure, at first, more than a few heads shall be turned, with their difficulty in seeing the truth of themselves. But the truth is that eventually it shall go unnoticed as it becomes common place.

Truth is truth, people trying to hide the truth from themselves are selfish liars, cheats and backstabbers that cannot actually be trusted, as they have psychological issues.

What is the incidence of rape within nude communities, such as nudist colonies and nude beaches? I bet it's lower than in clothed communities. I would also bet that if it happens at all, the perpetrators are from a clothed community.

Great job on your argument, we both obviously see truth, in this particular matter, equally. I noticed that your wording was of a more diplomatic nature, where mine is, 'in your face.' As arising has pointed out, on several occasions, I usually have an extremely passionate tone to my arguments, such that people tend to avoid confronting me. I do not actually bite, I'm just extremely passionate about certain issues, because at my age I've grown tired of mankind's BS, and expect him to get over himself already! :)

You will note that he seems obsessed with displaying his naked body. Tbieter chooses to focus entirely on the penis. Who has an obsession?
Why don't you submit your best answers and reasoning in response to my questions?
OK, Tom.

Why do gays tend to want to display their penis in public such as in alleged "performance art" shows or during Gay Pride parades?

No idea. Also no idea whether this kind of exhibitionism is more prevalent amongst gays than straights. Any statistics, Tom?

Is it more likely than not that Scully's claim of performance art is just a pretext for actual exhibitionism?
No idea. Not skilled in remote psychoanalysis. Can you recommend a course in that?
