"But the impotence one feels today—an impotence we should never consider permanent—does not excuse one from remaining true to oneself, nor does it excuse capitulation to the enemy, what ever mask he may wear. Whether the mask is labeled fascism, democracy, or dictatorship of the proletariat, our great adversary remains The Apparatus—the bureaucracy, the police, the military. Not the one facing us across the frontier or the battle lines, which is not so much our enemy as our brothers’ enemy, but the one that calls itself our protector and makes us its slaves. No matter what the circumstances, the worst betrayal will always be to subordinate ourselves to this Apparatus, and to trample underfoot, in its service, all human values in ourselves and in others." Reflections on War, Simone Weil
The Apparatus
The Apparatus
Have you ever wondered how much of your humanity is sacrificed to the apparatus? How many things are done not because they are the human thing to do but because they are the way of the apparatus? Suppose Simone Weil is right, how many can really become consciously human and not just remain conditioned disciples of the apparatus?

Tale wagging the dog.
The Tale is the stated ostensible intent.
For instance, the ostensible intent of the global warming movement is to save the planet. Lordy.
The tale is often disconnected from reality and human nature, and in the case of the global warming political movement, disconnected from science.
The tale is told to prove the goodness of the ostensible intent.
And then reality walks in and takes a dump.

Re: The Apparatus
A very meaningful post Walker. It is no wonder that Plato referred to society as the Beast. Somehow many lose their humanity in support of the Beast. What surprises me is that so few are open enough to admit this effect.

I think Lacewing once said something similar, if I recall correctly.Nick_A wrote:A very meaningful post Walker. It is no wonder that Plato referred to society as the Beast. Do you think that by admitting this effect the many will regain their humanity while still supporting the Beast?

IMO In order for a person to become more human and less a conditioned particle of the Great Beast, a person needs help from above. How many know the difference between giving to the state (the Beast) and directing ones attention to the above? Not many would know how they become complimentary. Of course a philosopher king could but there are not many of them.
Yes, but I believe it would require opening to a certain quality of understanding secularism is closed to. Mark 12:17 And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.Do you think that by admitting this effect the many will regain their humanity while still supporting the Beast?

I’ve considered this from another angle: placement of attention. This is the effortless approach.
Placement of attention has a larger horizon and is really all it takes for an intellectual contemplation that yields insight of such significance as to change the course of a life. This is actually the method used in the practice of self-enquiry, which begins as an exhausting intellectual contemplative practice and then continues from there.
There is a logical structure of support to feed this to the Ego-boss … like honey for a mean old ossified concept-worshipping bear.
Re: The Apparatus
This is one of the most overtly political passages in the bible. The spokesman for the Roman church tells the audience to give Rome what is Rome's. How else should we interpret it?Nick_A wrote:...I believe it would require opening to a certain quality of understanding secularism is closed to. Re: The Apparatus
You are right IMO but the problem is that humanity as a whole is incapable of conscious attention. Without impartial conscious attention self-enquiry becomes meaningless interpretations and self justificationWalker wrote: Placement of attention has a larger horizon and is really all it takes for an intellectual contemplation that yields insight of such significance as to change the course of a life. Could it really be that the majority of the world’s atrocities and the experience of personal emptiness are due to the loss of the capacity for conscious attention which makes it easy to hide in imagination for the sake of imaginary self justification?"Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity. It is given to very few minds to notice that things and beings exist. Since my childhood I have not wanted anything else but to receive the complete revelation of this before dying." ~Simone Weil.
