Fish pie hears voices and the technical term for that is schizophrenia. While that is an awful affliction it also means that his recommendations are probable best avoided.

I wondered about this too. I have a few off-hand thoughts. Presumably at one time the Middle-East was a lusher environment that could afford magic and superstition. Habits that don't go extinct continue. By contrast I notice that the Norse religious texts are very practical. I wonder if this could be because in the cold north one couldn't afford to humor superstition as it would result in death by cold or starvation?Khalid wrote:Why is religion full of mystification and complications?
I also suspect that the huge edifice of laws has a role in creating in-groups and out-groups. Muslims have a narrow diet due to their taboos, have a distinctive style of fashion, a time of waking and sleeping about two hours different from others, very loud prayer, and a whole month long holiday of fasting and not sleeping properly, and so on, all of which has the result of making it very difficult for others to care to socialize with Muslims and vice versa.
Take a specific example. Pork. Much debated and this is only my own guess... Originally Semitic people ate pork after the pig had been domesticated. But as the Near East dried out, from a mix of man-made and climactic causes, pork could no longer be raised and goats who eat twigs and brush became favored. Since pigs grow and breed much faster than goats, they are the preferred choice if possible. When the Philistines, who we now know to be Greeks arrived, they brought pigs. The local Semites came to identify the new arrivals as pork eaters and themselves as not eating pork. Various superstitious explanations were invoked such as Judaic law about eating the cud and revelation to Muhammad eventually. At base, the point is formation of identity between in group and out group peoples.
On the social level the purpose is group identity formation, on the personal level the rules operate the same as OCD. Rising anxiety leads to performance of ritual to temporarily alleviate the stress. Reality testing rarely happens that would expose the falseness of the compulsive performance. Wudu, salah, halal, and so on all conform to this model or social identity and personal OCD.

If you put more effort into ignoring us it wouldn't matter, would it? You're just trying to blame others for your own laziness.thedoc wrote:

The question is, why twist logic when you know better?vegetariantaxidermy wrote:Fish pie hears voices and the technical term for that is schizophrenia. While that is an awful affliction it also means that his recommendations are probable best avoided.
- It's a way to be light, strangely enough.

Harbal, that’s your inner poet struggling to spread its wings.Harbal wrote:Thanks for not drawing attention to my spelling mistake.vegetariantaxidermy wrote:That too.Harbal wrote:

“… I feel awful know…”
With less poetic brevity, it reads, “ … I feel an awful know …”
I think you would likely spin some gold and heads with a page or two of S.O.C.

Like I said, occasionally you are amusing.

But not only the deaf don't hear voices that don't belong to anybody, doghead.
