So then why do you entrust a bunch of off-the-street folk who had nothing better to do with their lives than join the military guard those weapons?

Frankly I trust me with a nuke more than I trust them with a nuke; is just that I probably can't afford the maintenance/running/storage costs.
attofishpi wrote: Thu Nov 09, 2023 9:26 am At least there is a required consultancy and agreement between fairly intelligent people prior to use of such a weapon.
Which was precisely my point around bypassing those systems.

Presidents and codes from 3 different people are not actually required to operate those systems.

Ask the system designer how to short-circuit the protocols and bypass the social guarantees.

There's the standard operating procedure, and there's the designer's manual.

Hey everyone, it's really intelligent in a modern society to allow everyone to have access to any weapon they like.

OMG, one might end up with monthly mass killings of innocent citizens - OH!! HANG ON!! That is happening because the likes of Henry Q and SuperDick want to have guns and share that right with everyone.

On February 24, 2022 Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said "We will give weapons to anyone who wants to defend the country. Be ready to support Ukraine in the squares of our cities" in a tweet. As of February 26, 2022 over 25,000 automatic rifles, 10 million rounds of ammunition and unknown number of RPGs have been handed out to civilians according to Interior Minister Denis Monastyrsky. All one needs to get a rifle is an I.D. card. Open training has been organized for civilians by war veterans throughout Kyiv.

There is no such thing as "society" without guns...

Idiot.

When you completely erase the traditions of gun ownership and the necessary yet unfortunate need and use of violence from your culture, who is going to fight your wars?

When you build your perfect land of pacifism, who's going to stand up to the barbarians when they come knocking?

The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools... --Whoever

I will see your Martin Bryant and raise you one Vladimir Putin. Vladimir totally hates the fact that anybody has any guns in Ukraine, but at least they don't have nukes.

Using war as an excuse for everyone keeping any gun they want?

How well do you think citizens of Gaza would be fairing right now IF everyone of them owned an AR?

AR is fantastic against air to ground missiles. They'd all be in exactly the same position they are now, fucked.

Why is it an "excuse"?

The people probably don't even want the guns or the war; but the war found them and the government is issuing the guns for free...

They would be faring much better than being unarmed. But they still face a juggernaut of a military either way.

But hey, the vietnamese farmers managed to teach the USA a lesson so never say never...

Sure sounds like you are making the argument for civilians needing to own more than an AR...

For that weirdly peculiar scenario of being invaded by a technologically superior foreign army in a modern, civilized society.

Skepdick - your entire argument appears to be premised upon there being a war or potential for war.

A compromise - when the guns were being turned in and destroyed when Martin Bryant did his thang in the nineties - I was of the opinion that these weapons should be stored for citizens to use in any case of an invasion.

At the time of war, sure allow citizens to have access to guns.

However you think this acceptable WHEN NOT AT WAR:-

Yeah, sure. No problem - Switzerland is doing it just fine.

What do these numbers mean exactly? Do you even understand?

How do you reconcile the seemingly paradoxical facts?

1. Switzerland has 2.84 per 100000 gun deaths; UK has 0.03 per 100000 gun deaths.
2. Switzerland is a safer country than the UK

What do you make of the fact that Switzerland has 10x the gun-death rate of the UK and yet Switzerland is a much safer country than the UK?
FFS you just go around in circles, we've done this. Compare the USA to ANY other country. (gun ownership per capita, deaths per capita to gun violence)

Why do I have to make such a comparison? The comparison is meaningless.

Exactly as demonstrated.

Switzerland has 2.84 per 100000 gun deaths.
UK has 0.03 per 1000000 gun deaths.

Why is Switzerland safer?

The fact that it's safer.

Per-capita mortality rate ( all causes) is half that of UK.
Life expectancy in Switzerland is 3 years higher (83 vs 80 years).
Healthcare and quality of life exceeds that of the UK across all metrics.

Has consistently remained neutral in war/conflict.

Why are you comparing the stupid kids to the stupid kids?

Compare the paragon cases.
