the nanny state

Safety should never be the top priority. Balancing safety against common sense should always be the first priority.

If not for safety, would humans be around?

In what way is common sense not consistent with safety?

"Safety First" creates many unnecessary obstacles, including obstacles to the core point of whatever; such things as security theater when there is no meaningful risk.

Dear Advocate

I can think of a few sound arguments against a Nanny State* but yours here is rather awkward. It’s really very hard to agree upon a specific definition of “common sense” and it cannot be said to in itself go against a want for “safety”.

I wouldn't say i made an argument so much as a point to start the discussion. Your examples, taken together, do a better job of fleshing out the problem.

Typically i assume a vernacular understanding of words to be sufficient until shown otherwise. But for starting a conversation, there's no way to satisfy anyone in a first post so i start small and see which direction the wind is blowing. You can learn a lot about people by seeing what bits they respond to, especially when you start simply.

I mean that you and I operate differently in response to our common concept of safety.

You describe safety as a separate enterprise that should not be utilized first.

I see the same safety as being the top priority, however it may be quickly assumed without focus or concentration.

If you put safety above truth, for example, it would be imaginary safety. If you put safety above the ability to progress based on that safety, that safety would be counterproductive.

While on my way to scrumptious food and drink at my favorite establishment, I’d rather not be run over by one of the city’s waste management trucks.

The nearest one is 5 hrs, 15 min. drive. Is it worth it?

Not really, but if you find yourself within 10 - 15 min it’s worth a stop. Ask for the flavor of the day in a waffle cone.
