He began as a drummer in highschool but then switched to guitar... and when he formed the MOI, he wuz too busy composing for the band to really have any time to practice. Steve Vai describes his playing as less virtuoso, more visceral. But he had a very distinct style of soloing that u always recognize when u hear it: yeah, that's frank, u can totally tell.
