It seems that sex is the #1 human activity. So what can you substitute for it? (a cold shower?)

There is no substitute for sex for a man. However you can eliminate the urge. For example force yourself to listen to loud recorded speeches by Hillary Clinton for three straight hours. That should destroy the desire for a woman.

Well yeah, there's lots more to life than sex. For those who like it, the tragedy is that it's ever an 'either/or.

I wouldn't mix sex with a car chase, but I guess it could liven up meditation and for some people, it's already work and/or art.

Car chase sex.

Well, I wasn't really thinking of combining the two. I had in mind some poor sod who, unwilling or unable to get their rocks off, either with the aid of another human being or, as the title parenthesises, single-handedly, instead feels compelled to jump in a car and drive like an idiot.

Viable alternatives:

Agony
Anguish
Abject misery

The no. 1. problem with sudden-onset blindness in adults is the inability to see sexual objects.

The no. 1. problem with people who lose their forelimbs is the inability to randomly pee at will, and the inability to play with themselves.

See please the Seinfeld episode, "I'm out".

When the romantic poets of the era sang about the bittersweet agony of love, they were not kidding. In those days the suggestion to not masturbate was much stronger than today. Many people forewent it, and only allowed themselves to release sexual tension in marriage.

Prayer; self-flagellation; kneeling on cracked corn; penance.
