It's one of the best numberphile videos I've seen to date. The host discusses a recent paper which showed pretty clear and high drops in mathematical understanding for people when faced with issues they have strong beliefs about, in this case political beliefs.

Something to think about in terms of self-reflection when reading or referencing science as part of issues you face in political- or otherwise belief-based spheres of life.
