Here's an* hypothesis, which is an idea that follows the navel gazing questions. It's entertaining and more importantly, it's relevant enough to gain an angle of insight to the current Kropotkin thesis, in his quest for a unified field theory of happiness.

Based on the memoirs of Kroptokin, I do not think that this quote applies to his world view in the personal sense, although he has abstracted it into a concept that makes capitalism the evil villain in the chain of blame.

K: I have in fact, on several occasions, rejected the point that the
the meaning of existence is the pursuit of happiness...

this is the key line from the declaration of Impendence,
which in fact I reject:

''We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are
created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with
certain inalienable rights, that among these are ''LIFE, LIBERTY
AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS''

And I reject that the point of, the meaning of life is the
''pursuit of happiness'' and why? that there is no universal,
applied to everyone, pursuit of happiness... for many, many,
the point/meaning of existence is this fable of America in which
we pursue money/fame/titles/ power/material possessions...
and that in fact, those trinkets are illusions, momentary goals
meant to distract us from what is really important....
and Kropotkin, what is the real point, meaning of existence?'

and here we hit the perception vs reality argument I laid out in
another thread around here.... that the perceptions are of more
value, worth chasing than the reality, the behind the scenes
of our perceptions...the reality of existence...

and our perceptions not only color our understanding of the real
meaning/point of reality, but they overshadow what is the point
of, the meaning of existence...the real battle is to overcome
our own indoctrinations/perceptions of reality... to get behind
them and see the reality/truth of our lives...and once we can
get past the false perceptions/indoctrinations, that clouds
our understanding of the truth, the reality of existence,
then and only then can we actually begin the process of
learning what is the point of, the meaning of reality....
by getting behind the perceptions/indoctrinations of existence, we
can learn what the point of, the meaning of existence actually is...

so, to get to the meaning of life, the point of existence, we
have to go beyond, past the indoctrinations and perceptions
we have, we aren't even close to finding out our real
purpose/meaning until we work past our current indoctrinations
and perceptions...once we become ''WOKE'" to the current
indoctrinations and perceptions, we can come closer to
what really is the meaning of, the point of existence....

for me personally, it is the Nietzschean idea of going from
animal, to animal/human (which is where most people are today)
to becoming fully human... the goal of life is to travel the path of
going from animal to becoming fully human... but Kropotkin,
what happens if we do reach the point where we are ''becoming''
have reached the goal of becoming fully human?
and that is interesting question....

I believe we have had certain people reach that goal of becoming
fully human.... and I hold that these people are/ought to be,
our role models because they did reach becoming fully human...
and my list includes, Goethe, Shakespear, MLK, Gandhi, Jesus,
Montaigne, and perhaps, perhaps even Nietzsche....as examples...
and what connects all these people? their search for what it means
to be human.... each of them created a new understanding of
what it means to be human...and then they in turn created in
both words and actions, that reflection, this new understanding
of what it means to be human...

and once we reach critical mass in our understanding of what
it means to be human, we flip, and we enter a new stage of
our understanding of what it means to be human.....

this is reflected in the history of human beings...
in the past, when we get a new understanding of humans,
we can make new progress in the search for what it means
to be human....and we can take as examples, the Enlightenment
era... that is a new vision of what it means to be human,
and that new vision changed history.. we might be able
to mark down as one of the changes in human history being
the ''age of Enlightenment" and the following age,
the "Romantic'' era, is another stage, another understanding
of what it means to be human....

the goal/meaning of existence is not the pursuit of happiness
but the pursuit of becoming human, fully human...

it is relatively easy to describe the world....
we can use, as a parameter, science to lay out
a pretty good description of the world...
and that is science.... but what about
going past or beyond the basic description of
the world... that becomes philosophy.. not how
the world is, but why the world is...
what is the point of, the meaning of existence is not
a scientific idea, but a philosophical idea or as some
might think it, a religious question...but here again,
we run into problems with our basic descriptions of
the world...we are educated, indoctrinated with certain ideas,
the existence of god is an indoctrinated idea.. we are indoctrinated
with this idea from birth.. and it is tough to overcome an indoctrinated
idea.. to overcome that indoctrination is in many ways, our primary
reason in existence... to overcome our childhood indoctrinations
and gain knowledge of what we really believe in...to go behind
the perceptions that we are educated with, to the reality behind
the perceptions... in other words, our perceptions of the world
has become the reality of the world... we mistake our preceptions,
the indoctrinations of our children as the reality of our adult world
perceptions are reality....

and we need to get past perceptions to get a real picture of reality...
not just our perceptions, but the nature of reality... what is real,
what is not.. is found in our overcoming our perceptions, our
indoctrinations... and that is found and the point of philosophy...
to overcome our perceptions and indoctrinations from childhood
to have an understanding of the world that matches our own
newly discovered understanding of the world....as I grew older,
I discovered that my indoctrinations and perceptions of the world
were wrong.. not what? I can either stay with my perceptions/indoctrinations
or I can explore my newly found understanding of the world...
but for many people, this newly found, behind the scenes
of reality is quite scary...and so for many people, instead of going
behind the perceptions/indoctrinations, they simple keep with the
notion that our reality is simply about perceptions of the world...
how we see the world is the reality of our world...and there is no
hidden scenes behind these indoctrinations, perceptions....
what you see is what you get.. there is nothing else...there is
nothing past or beyond the reality that we see....
and that is how millions, even perhaps billions of human beings, see
the world... that their perception of the world is the reality of the world...
and there is no other reality or truth behind this ''knowledge''
we gain by seeking out the truth behind this reality... we can stand
with our perceptions and indoctrinations because they accurately
describe the world as it is.. and there is nothing past those
indoctrinations and perceptions....

so, what is real... our perceptions/indoctrinations of the world or
what is real is what is behind those perceptions/indoctrinations
of the world?

answer that and that will tell us/you, if you are really a
philosopher or a theologian?

I have introduced this notion of a theologian, vs a philosopher
and I should probably flesh out this notion...

a philosopher is one who attempts to overcome their own
and the societies, indoctrinations and perceptions..
for a great deal of philosophy is the act of overcoming
the state or society indoctrinations or perceptions....
for a society that believes, as virtually all societies believe
that their perception of reality is the reality of the situation...
perception of reality is reality.. and there is nothing beyond
or past those perceptions/indoctrinations of the state/society....

a theologian is one who only sees the apparent perception of
the being of god.. and a theologian does not argue for seeing
past that perception/indoctrination of god.. they argue for
the existence of god based on their prior indoctrinations and
perceptions... and the vast majority of people are, whether they
realize it or not, are theologians as they argue for their perceptions/
indoctrinations of their childhood... that is the basis of most
people being theologians.... arguing the perceptions/indoctrinations
of their childhood.. because they never had an overcoming of their
indoctrination or childhood perceptions of the nature of the world,
of reality.... theologian can only argue with their own notions/
indoctrinations of the world, they cannot get past those
indoctrinations... they have never overcome...

so, are your beliefs that you so passionately believe in, are they
philosophical because you overcame your childhood indoctrinations
and perceptions, or are you a theologian, where you argue
for the indoctrination and perceptions that you were educated with
as children? most people in the world are theologians,
and a few, we lucky few, are philosophers.....

so, who are you?
