Tonight I finished reading Sowell's newest book. http://www.amazon.com/Intellectuals-Soc ... 877&sr=1-1
I was going to begin writing a review when I happened upon this interview with the author. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERj3QeGw9Ok You will profit more from listening to Sowell for 30 minutes than listening to me pontificate an entire day.
Two intellectuals frequently mentioned (critically) by Sowell are John Dewey and Bertrand Russell. Having read much of both writers, I think that Dewey should have confined his opinions to the classroom and Russell should not have strayed from logic and mathematics.
I highly recommend Sowell's book.

Re: Intellectuals and Society by Thomas Sowell
Indeed, Thomas Sowell looks very good! Thanks for bringing him up! To raise the issue that intellectuals have the "duty" to be more than an expert in their field is well done! The leading stars ought perhaps to be leading stars to the full extent. He also says in the interview that being an intellectual and go outside your domain of expertise may be to step outside a cliff.
So, so, I've taken notice of this man!
