Has anyone tried Virtual Reality (VR) ?

Post by attofishpi »

As a bit of a PC gamer for years I was looking for the day where I could be IN the game, instead of watching it on a 2D screen. I had been following the progress of Palmer Lucky with his Occulus development - and when he sold out to Facebook, my decision was made up -i'd go HTC VIVE.

To me it was like the decision Apple or PC/Android - easy decision for someone that likes the hobbyist free development side of things rather than corporate control.

Someone came in to the office with a device where he plugged his smart-phone into some goggles and had some basic VR demos. I was very impressed - about 3 months later I ordered the VIVE - and have loved it since 2016.

The VIVE has full room scale tracking, with hand controllers - the immersion is amazing. When you put the headset on, and your entire arm is replaced as a plasma gun, or your hand are now like the Terminators!! etc, etc...

This is one of the latest games Half Life - Alyx :- If you are interested watch this - especially at 6mins 15secs in - presented by the nutjob jacksepticeye!

So.

Just wondering whether any of you guys have experienced VR? Two of the five senses are overtaken entirely - then you have the movement also with room scale. My sister wouldn't step off of a plank at the top of a skyscraper, she was literally screaming on the floor attempting to hold on to the plank!

I have an Oculus Quest. It's immersive enough that I tried to lean on a "table" (in the virtual world) and fell on my face in the real one.

Finally! - seriously as I started the thread i figured if ne1 around here would be into it, would be U dude!

I almost put my right controller through the window of my study when punching a zombie. :D (min size for the roomscale unfortunately)

If you know anyone that does 3D character modelling and animation and are wanting a script, I am trying to do my c-punk novel Alpha Two into a VR movie. I've done a bar scene from chapter one, with Charlie the barman done in makehuman - IT BLOODY NAILED HIM - It is how I envisioned Charlie - he's quite a character in the book.

But its nice to enter the bar in VR and look around at what was in my mind when I wrote it. :)

Go outside! I have a 8x8m play area in my garden.

I think the game in town is now called "self-publishing". Writing scripts/writers are a dime a dozen - it's the execution of the idea that's all the buzz now.

Get it done - publish it yourself. If you get a large enough fan base, you can always scale up the project.

That's extreme but wise - if your dog doesn't enjoy digging holes.

Nah Im not talking about the book - that side of it is fine - i'll do another print run eventually.

Just need two or three people that are in to Unreal Engine VR development to join me. Don't think I'm on the right forum for that tho.

A friend gave me an Oculus for Christmas. My internet connectivity can be spotty where I live, so I've only had success with a few programs so far. The last one was a flight to and around the moon, and across its surface in a small space capsule. Going around the moon, I started to feel a little motion sickness. Looking around and seeing space everywhere was pretty trippy -- I even had a brief sense of loneliness. I enjoy being a bit of a hermit, away from the noise, but maybe not that much. :) I look forward to trying more programs.

I've got the PSVR because I wanted something I could afford realistically before I possibly miss my chance AND because the present level of the best VR, like the Vive or Occulus still lack the degree needed for it to be completely viable.

I'm looking forward to 4K per eye and, as some are in the stage of developing, a visor that covers the peripheral most completely. I'm impressed with everything but at present think we need the level of interest in recording VR videos at highest quality standards beginning with the porn industry. [Porn is still the first area that tech in this area has to most appeal to because it demonstrates the power of the tech and is where the investment would help pay off for the VR devices.]

I've tried a few major games that are impressive (AstoBot and Residential Evil are two of the best ones for PS4 systems to test these). But the interest in game making has fizzled out given popularity still lies with 2D. (The investment-to-profit rate on making these games are likely in the negative still!)

I've also enjoyed the literal handful of partial and full immersion story telling....also only at demo-level quality that doesn't yet go beyond a maximum of 10 minute shorts. The "Invasion" videos are most professional as partial immersion (you can look around but not move as the story plays out). Then I've tried "Allumette" for a fuller immersion that I'm impressed with (can move around the 'set' or 'stage' of the story as will as see 360).

Another need is for programs (non-game) that are not merely on 'demo-level' quality. For PS4, I've tried some of the art-creation programs that disappoint me in how they lack the controls to create something beyond 'toying'. I would like to see the software development advance enough for software that is more functional and transferable. While these likely exist beyond Playstation, they are still beyond the reach in accessibility without having a much larger wallet.....some are still only affordable for corporate-level investors or possibly within Universities and mainframes.

The 4K per eye is at LEAST needed to make videos that go beyond porn and is now delayed likely to the Covid-19 factor.

I would not want to invest in the more flexible Vive nor Occulus UNTIL the tech has advanced to that 8K (4K x 2) level and preferentially when the peripheral factor is improved. The present tech will be relatively obsolete and you are throwing away money if you invest too much in the more expensive VR now.

P.S. Edit: I also want to see the means of utility programs available to participate in creating VR programs themselves. I might be interested in getting into programming at that level but see the present limitations requiring too much to investment loss in learning something that changes too quickly and unpredictably.

True. Who are people trying to kid. It's all about porn and that's the first thing that comes into every man's mind when VR is mentioned

I wasn't looking to VR for porn and have only developed a bigger interest in it on VR for it being what is available the most to utilize and test the experience. I'd rather see more extensive interest in other things.

Have you seen Allumette or the Invasion series yourself, for instance? See Best Virtual Reality Apps as an example of what is available on these. This list has not changed for the last few years because nothing new is being made after the novelty has worn off. The tech and cost prevents widespread capacity to meet the interests of enough people yet. The experience is 'personal' and thus cannot be shared easily. The present level of tech thus still favors the 'personal' interests of those who are relatively isolated socially, just as video gaming. So porn should not be a surprise to be a necessary stepping stone.

Note that merely all tech first gets developed and contained by Military related interests. Porn is just another phase beyond that necessary to evolve the tech to something more universal. They are like the 'Edison' film era that first spread the interest of film making using cheap shorts that appeal to the individual shallowly. It will advance beyond that in time, though.

Edit:
For "Invasion", see the trailer: Invasion! VR Teaser Trailer. The company Baobab made a followup on of this too. This is more of what I'd like to see on the creative end of things.

It could be fantastic. There's a TV show I like called 'Your home made perfect' that uses VR to show people how their house could look. It's amazing. I felt like I wanted one of those :D

I did WAY back in 1992 - in college - the flying ptaridacktal, a slow 3 FPS pixelated mess.

- then 3 yrs later was a fan of Viscape and the whole Virtual web - 3d web of the mid 90's.

Viscape? vi-who? never heard of them, well they were gone by 97, still had the 3d web (VVVW?)- HTML for the 3d web (Cortona, etc for the few years after Viscape died - but by 2002 or so Cortona was gone and so with it all the the former hopes and vision of a 3d web).

your view is just the 2-generation of what i know about in the 1st gen, and it too will fade away.

------------

prabmatically speaking, just give me a big screen for my flight combat sims - big as in 65-to projection 9 feet - full front view - 3-7 feet in front of - and its 3d.

the whole goggle shit will be a footnote in history, just like Viscape.

sad about Viscape, they were kewl 23 yrs ago but now utterly forgotten - as for goggles, not as kewl as a big sceen, so not worthy of being forgotten nor remember prior, just give me a big screen/projectior and i'm there in "3d".
