Immanual Kant was important in the history of phenomenology. He made the distinction of phenomena and noumena which became part of classical philosophy. He also wrote that we only know our Self by the modifications of the mind we create; we only know ourselves as we appear to ourselves. I do not believe a physiology of the brain is ever going to produce an understanding of our Self, any more than the cardiologist is an an expert on love.
