Evil old warmongering bastard should have been hanged for war crimes and disposed of in a dumpster, but I do love this melody (not the sentiment).
Good depiction of how pathetic 'hero-worship' is. Just look at the stupid, credulous faces, weeping over a mass murderer. If anything, idolised leaders are generally the most vile, flawed and inadequate of humanity.

Why do you say such mean things about Winston Smith’s namesake?

Are you an agent of the timeless thought police that strapped the rat cage to Smith’s face?

Not just a "Evil old warmongering bastard" but a thoroughly naive and stupid one who practically idolized Stalin until it became clear he had his own agenda completely out of sync with the other two stooges Roosevelt but especially Churchill who as a European conversant with its history should have known better. Churchill makes one's skin crawl nearly as much as Hitler.

Winston Smith, the protagonist of Orwell’s 1984, was named after Churchill.

Why do you suppose Orwell did that?

(Haven't seen the Gary Oldman movie about Churchill. Is it any good, or is it a pack of lies?)

Indeed. He also knew perfectly well about the concentration camps but did nothing. People are so pathetically naive and black and white over what constitutes 'good' and 'evil'. The British royals and aristocracy were big fans of Hitler.

Perhaps he liked the name. I haven't seen the film but unless it shows him up as the arsehole that he was, then it's a pack of lies.

Since 1984 was published in 1949, Orwell could be forgiven believing in the noble mission and heroism of the Allied forces and its leaders. One of the greatest events of 20th century history having just occurred, it wasn't yet under scrutiny forced by hindsight; that came gradually and much later changing a whole lot of preconceptions...many of which still survive.
