Popularity v etc

Post by Jaded Sage »

What is the difference between popularity, honor, respect, prestige and good reputation?

Also, isn't the faculty by which we distinguish them called discernment?

Popularity is mostly a fallacy of argumentum populum.

Having friends who are idiots is useless.

How would that fallacy be less applicable to honour and prestige?
Does it help distinguish between the categories?

Surely honour accrues when lots of people hold you in a specific form of high regard, and popularity requires them to like without necessarily venerating.
Some of that list are roughly synonymous because they do more or less the same things. The remainder do different things.

Worse than useless. Whatever pleasure they bring they outdo in character assimilation (that's when you become like the company you keep). Eventually you'll find yourself sharing the same idiot opinions, and when you experience something together, if there is any harmonious similarity between you, it will allow him to influence the way you undergo the experience, which could develop into an idiot habit.

Honor is based on virtue. Popularity is based on pure appeal. Both are a kind of social distinction. Respect is honor minus social distinction. Prestige is usually based on something competitive, and more sought-after than usual. Good reputation is good social standing.
