How to respond to an insult on a forum ?
Re: How to respond to an insult on a forum ?
The response, or lack of it, would depend on the potential entertainment value of the insult. If you can have a little fun with it, go for it, If on the other hand it is very lame, just let it lie and ignore it.

You want to know what bugs a person the most, including when he throws insults? Wilfull misunderstanding of the insult.

Part of my problem is that much of what I post is subtle, or some kind of inside joke that most do not get, at least they don't respond, and that gets frustrating. Sometimes it's nice to know that at least someone understands what I am saying.Dalek Prime wrote:You want to know what bugs a person the most, including when he throws insults? I like a line from a show I used to watch, explaining why one of the characters always laughed at a joke, even when they didn't understand it, "Those who don't get the joke, often become the butt of the joke".

I hear ya doc. Totally get what you're saying. Me too. Makes me wonder why I bother, and not give up instead. I think I'm better at letting go these days, and not dwelling on it.thedoc wrote:Part of my problem is that much of what I post is subtle, or some kind of inside joke that most do not get, at least they don't respond, and that gets frustrating. Personally, I'd go with what Barnabas Collins would do.duszek wrote:It might be helpful to ask:

What would Inspector Barnaby do ?

Oh My Goodness, I used to get off teaching in time to watch "Dark Shadows" with my mother-in-law in the afternoon. I can remember the usual ending where a young woman was walking along a path, then the path lead up a dark ravine, and we always thought, "Don't go up that path" and she went up the path and was the next victim. At least that is the ending that sticks in my memory.Dalek Prime wrote:Personally, I'd go with what Barnabas Collins would do.duszek wrote:It might be helpful to ask:

It always struck me that Barnabas lived in Collingwood and there was a British battleship of the same name the HMS Collingwood (1908). And I worked with a woman who came from Collingwood NJ.

My all time favourite soap opera, doc! I am considering purchasing the full set of approx. 1250 half-hour episodes, for a lark.
During the 70's, there was a similar soap in Canada named "Strange Paradise". Quite entertaining as well.
Johnny Depp, when he played the Barnabas role in the updated film, said he had loved the show, and wanted to grow up to be Barnabas. Looks like he got his wish, in a way lol!

Eliminate the whole thread where the insult occurred. Simple, decisive, effective.

I am not sure about this, Gustav.
A good thread can be made to disappear that way by someone who just plants an insult in it.

Re: How to respond to an insult on a forum ?
When people respond to insults they do it in order to restore their honour which they feel threatened or sullied by the insult.
Duels were arranged in such cases.
To restore the honour of the injured party.
Not everyone was able to give satisfaction though.

There would be very few threads left on the forum if you did thatGustav Bjornstrand wrote:

How about for every insult you post you lose seven days privileges
Were this in place now Hobbes and Leo and Phil and Hex and veg would all be out
This would affect me as well for I would then have to wait for them to come back
