Morality the objective Crime; Ethics the subjective solution

Post by Lev Muishkin »

The roots of morality do not reside in the rational, or the religious. Adequate and viable means of and ways of relating to each other, as members of the same species can be seen in our close evolutionary cousins.
How we "feel" about each other are urges beyond our control and inform the generalised rules that people like to call objective and moral.
But in the same breath that such rules are formulated they are as easily subverted to the will of the state, and the will of other institutions such as religions, races, tribes, and other groups within humanity.

To be honestly ethical it is necessary to bear witness to all those formulations of morality which feed to Leviathan (the human group), and demonstrate how and where such rules can be destructive to the individual. To be authentic it is necessary to be true to oneself and embrace only those rules which you personally consider the be adequate to human and personal progress.

The honesty also comes in NOT trying to pretend that the generalised and historically contexted rules that are often imposed on us are somehow magically objective, absolute and beyond the interests of the interests groups and elites which form and impose them. The fact is that for most of history the moral landscape has been devised and imposed by the ruling elites as a way to control the population and those same people have pretended that such rules are natural, godly and made without their personal interest. These are lies.

For the last 200 years morality has been challenged and is still undergoing revision: a revision that has led to the empowerment of the people, of subject races and subject sections of the populace such as women, children, gays, workers, commoners.

As ordinary citizens we need to maintain constant vigilance against moves to back-track on this progress. This requires that straight people support gay; white support black, and indigents support immigrants ad infinitem.

(1) How we "feel" about each other are urges beyond our control If I don't like young American Black men because of their disproportionate criminality, is this attitude beyond my control? and (2) inform the generalised rules that people like to call objective and moral. Not sure you know what you are talking about.

Some nations have had a very harsh and unforgiving approach to POWs, torturing and random killings has been every day business, even not taking any prisoners at all. Then in modern times we impose our Geneve Convention upon nations to uphold a humane approach to war.
