Ebola Just Arrived in Cleveland - Looking For Advice

Philosophically...how should I react? Ebola may now be in the city where I live. Should I panic? Should I prepare to panic?

It's not like Cleveland is the only place on the planet crawling with do-gooders bent on introducing new menaces to their homelands. Will Pooley is returning to Sierra Leone after having recovered from Ebola once. “I’m excited to get back out there. I want to get back to work,” he says in noble crusader-ese. He's also appalled by the "luxurious cruise ship moving past life-raft survivors" indifference of the West to the non-sensationalist scourges in Africa, commenting that 70 times more people have died from malaria this year than Ebola.

So there, relax. Take it from an uber-principled, self-sacrificing individual like Will Pooley that there are far more malignant agencies for globally distributed Anglophones and the Euro folk to either fear or practice distant apathy about concerning their victims. It doesn't spread as easily as avian flu. Ebola also doesn't make a good STD. Not much time during the still-healthy phase to exchange body fluids with either the local street gals or the bears who hang out at that odd Sports Bar on the corner whose restrooms are adorned by penis-diameter apertures in the walls.

Should I just ignore the explosion of media and realize that the fear of Ebola is no more real than the fear of death?

Media frenzies are just opportunistic capitalism at its finest. Journalists and talk-show hosts have to pay for their Ferrari, Bugatti Veyron, Aston Martin, or Koenigsegg like everyone else.

You might want to go to Wiki and look up Ebola virus, that is what I did.

The good news was that it is not an air-born virus; the bad news was that it transfers through body fluids, but not like STD's. It transfers through ALL body fluids. So this includes tears, spit, sneezes, and sweat. A person who has this disease is going to sweat a lot from fever, and may also sneeze a lot, which is probably why it is so contagious. The other interesting thing was that a man who has survived Ebola still has the ability to spread the disease through semen for seven weeks after he is no longer considered contagious. An interesting point to consider.

Although Wiki had the death rate at 50%, it was more like 75% in areas that do not have proper hospitals, but only about 25% where there are hospitals available. Most people actually die of low blood pressure because Ebola causes a person to bleed through every orifice and internally, so death is caused through loss of body fluid. This blood loss also contributes to the contagion. So treatment would require an IV, which is why a hospital is necessary to survive this disease.

So if you get the flu, sneezing, fever, sore throat, and coughing, go to Wiki and look up the additional symptoms. If I remember correctly, you would be looking for red eyes (blood in the eyes) and maybe blood in the mucus that you cough up. If you find these, go to a hospital immediately.

If I remember correctly, it is thought that fruit bats are the carriers of this disease, and it is thought that the bats might drop some fruit that has saliva on it, which an ape or chimpanzee might pick up and eat, infecting themselves. There are people in Africa who will eat fruit bats, ape, and/or chimpanzee spreading the disease to humans.

So wash your hands. Don't eat any meat that is not acceptable by Biblical standards (or cook the hell out of it). And change your clothes after using any public conveyance, then wash your hands again.

I have been studying the laws as set down in the Book of Deuteronomy for many years and have wondered about the restrictions regarding food and cleanliness (sanitation). It occurs to me that following these rules would prohibit or at least contain some of the diseases that we are dealing with like Ebola. Makes a person wonder.

A nice fisting spin-off. But like catfish noodling, the occasional unpleasant surprise is usually what's lurking on the other side of a glory-hole. I believe it was an old episode of The Shield where a patron got a rat-trap or something affixed to his appendage. Of course, for a misplaced straight guy it would always be a bit rattling unless he's imagining in his head the opposite gender utilized in pop-porn.

One important item to remember about Ebola is to never place the victims who don't recover in the ordinary wooden boxes widely used in the remote, poor areas of Africa (due to costs). Cremate the bodies or seal them good in modern caskets, vaults, etc. Because it's the equivalent of The Walking Dead or I Am Legend pandemic, you know.
