Video: Professor Rae Langton interviewed

Post by RachelPU »

Hi all,

Check out this interview between Professors of Philosophy Sarah-Jane Leslie (Princeton University) and Rae Langton (Cambridge University) as they discuss feminist critiques of pornography.

Rae Langton - Pornography, Speech and Silence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wi7-_aYPzsk
Is there any sense to be made of the feminist idea that pornography literally silences women -- or is this at best a metaphorical claim? Does pornography subordinate women? Does pornography itself constitute subordination? Can insights from J.L. Austin's theory of speech acts help us understand these issues?

There are two more parts to this interview with Professor Langton, found here:

Rae Langton - Are We Slaves To Fashion?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htM9DrPJZJc

She must have followed the bread crum trail of soaps getting that job.

She sounds like a not-too-bright-femenist.

She talks like it's only women who do porn, and not other categories of sexes. Many will do it of own free will, but tragicly also many trafficked women will enter porn, that's needs to stop.

Slaves to fashion? That's a yes and no, some don't really care, but some will skim off the top and only pick a few things, whilst others will commit their whole life to fashion, it's no different than any other thing that one can be obsessive about, like sports, music idols, nerdy things, etc.
