Fermi's question can be answered by science fiction. In a typical story a single advanced technology is emphasized and drama comes from a related existential risk. If such a technology was available it would lead either directly to dystopia if a single entity controlled it, or if it were more broadly available would quickly become ubiquitous, be used, and cause exponential changes. In either instance, destruction is all but assured. Now consider more than one such technology.
