Why Morality? Free Will and Self-Consciousness

Should you think about your duty, or about the consequences of your actions? Or should you concentrate on becoming a good person?

Why Morality? Free Will and Self-Consciousness

Post by Veritas Aequitas »

There is no question of Morality and Ethics in relation to living non-human entities up to the highest non-human primates where all their actions are motivated by their inherent instincts.

Why Morality and Ethics is necessary in human beings is due to the emergence of the higher degree of self-consciousness and freewill [relative].

To facilitate survival the higher forms of living things are "programmed" with the instincts and potential to kill for food and self-defense, plus other morally related instincts. Except in rare situations due to defects, non-humans will only kill for food, self-defense, self-protection, rivalries and the likes.

Humans on the other hand are endowed via evolution with a higher degree of self-consciousness [egoism, self-interests, etc.] and freewill with the ability to choose what to do in overriding their instincts. Such abilities could be a threat to humanity.

To counter the above threats, humans are also endowed with a moral faculty or moral sense to override the excessiveness of selfish and evil acts arising from freewill that could threaten the individuals and humanity.

The moral faculty or moral sense is confined solely within the brain of each human individuals.
Thus whatever the moral facts, they are represented by brain activities and mental states-of-affairs.
These moral facts can be justified empirically and philosophically like any other facts that are specific to their respective Framework and System of Knowledge.

It is very ignorant of moral-facts-deniers to deny the existence of moral facts because to them there are no such moral facts as states-of-affairs within the external world of objects and things. Link - Peter Holmes Link2

What they are so ignorant is their inability to look inward to verify the existence of moral facts within their own brain/mind and externally the brain and mind of the 7+ billion of humans living externally to them in the 'external world'.

Therefore there are moral facts which is so evident.
