Suicide

Post by RWStanding »

Suicide
A radio programme with several philosophers and others, recently discussed the virtues and vices of Suicide, with no great consensus. Naturally someone took the binary route of right and wrong, with no rationale other than the mandate of his pseudo-god. This placing him in the bigoted and authoritarian category of society. What is more a category that removes any agency. And indeed removes any essential worth from individuals.
A society in which people have intrinsic worth, but purely to themselves, as free agents, is one alternative in the triangle. In this instance suicide is a personal affair, and of no moral concern to others.
A society based or communities of responsible altruism or concern is the other alternative in the triangle. Concern having no binary right and wrong. Suicide, is the unfortunate outcome of society itself, and the individual involved, being ‘sick’ as is very often inevitable within Nature. In which case an individual may be in such straits as cannot be rectified by society, and suicide is the outcome mourned by all.

There's much irony in your post.

If a person with "intrinsic worth, but purely to themselves" is considering suicide; and society is actively working to prevent the suicide from happening it seems like society places a higher intrinsic worth on the life of that individual than the individual themself does.

Isn’t suicide an escape from society and/or the pain of being alive?
