Professional medics deal with end of life issues. That is one of their normal duties. There undoubtedly was a time when you looked after your own end of life problems, and maybe the village priest came to help with a prayer and a bottle of whisky.
In the UK, health care, including end of life care, is free at point of use. There are easier ways of dying than the heroic gunshot to roof of mouth. Anyway, shooting is not offered to civilians in their beds.

It is a relief to one's nearest and dearest and to one's medical carers to be able to offer adequate relief for intolerable pain and loss of dignity.

How adequate is it for those who can't afford "Death With Dignity"? The government is so fucking insistent on having everything done their way - control, that they create much unnecessary misery for the Other while the pampered elite get things a little easier. There's no dignity in creating a system that excludes those most in need of it. There's no dignity in having to die "without dignity" because you can't afford to buy into a bullshit system of unnecessary rules and exclusions.

All the same rules apply to the war on drugs.
