Utilitarianism in practice

Post by lennartack »

I will ask a hypothetical question of importance.

A messenger from a planet far away, say Ardana, arrives. The planet is so far away the we will never be able to reach them, and they will never be able to reach us, except for this messenger. The Ardanians live in misery, but there is hope. We are given a perfect Wealth Transfer Machine. The Machine allows us to transfer part of our wealth to the people of Ardana. The Machine is perfect in the sense that no wealth is lost, and our wealth is equally distributed among all Ardanians.

We can choose to not use the Wealth Transfer Machine at all, to use it until the Earth wealth average is the same as Ardana's, or something in between these options.

We will democratically decide. Please vote in this topic.

You don't just give away wealth because a stranger of nowhere tells you he/she/it needs it. There has to be ties of trust and bonds of empathy that runs to some depth.
