Ten Thousand Years of Civilization and Philosophy
A radio debate between philosophers recently about the existence or not of Evil was unbelievable. It is still undecided after aeons of history. We cannot stand outside the world and universe calmly dividing it into good and evil. There is nothing outside, least of all us. ‘God’ as the reason for what exists is indeed intrinsic to it. In being part of the world we can only debate ‘good and evil’ in a relativist way, based on our own understanding and prejudices. If I am an altruist then ‘evil’ is what is logically in opposition to it. But, I can recognise that some people are not altruists beyond having mere tolerance for anything that does not interfere with them. Or they do not recognise any opposition to authority. If we are altruists in such a confused world, then either we altruists try to change minds, ensure we cannot be harmed, or shoot them as in war. A tolerant and harmless person, when multiplied in a society, can be quite an insidious ‘evil’ of ultimate chaos. Those who insist on a god of authority, outside our universe, are capable of believing any ethic they are told to. ‘God’ is not good other than according to ethical values.
