seeking the truth...

Post by Peter Kropotkin »

one might say, philosophy is the search for the truth...
Ok, but what truth? Truth is that which is closes to
reality... but whose reality? Because I was born in 1959,
my reality is different than your reality...and why?
Because we were raised with different isms, ideologies,
different indoctrinations, and very different realities...
I recall as a child, being told to go under the desk in case of
a nuclear bomb... and we were drilled into hating the Soviet Union
and Communism...just as they were also told to hide under a desk
in case of a nuclear bomb and to hate capitalism and America...
so, whose reality was right? Ours or theirs? or better yet, neither reality...

Ask 10 people, what is reality and you will get 12 different answers...
and how do we get the "truth" from 12 different understandings of reality?

one such reality is this: Abortion is wrong/evil.... it is proclaimed as
a "truth" and now what? what actions are taken in light of this
"reality?"... For the truth is a two step process... we have a certain
truth or reality that "abortions are evil" and then we have the second
step, which is what should/ ought we do about this reality?
what are we going to do about this? what actions should be taken?

so we have a two step process, which is one is the theory,
''abortions are evil" and the second step is action, what are we to do
with this "truth?"

The fact is that having a "truth" doesn't lead us to any sort of obvious
actions... for example, we might say, because "abortions are evil" we
must ban abortions... but that is the two step process in action...
the theory leads to some action... there is nothing obvious as far as
actions go in the truth statement that "abortions are evil"...
what connections exists, only exists within our own personal understanding
of what is reality.... we might say, abortions are evil and still do nothing
about abortions... the theory doesn't lead us to any obvious actions.,..

at one time in America, there was a theory, that "alcohol was evil"
and the proper response was to ban alcohol in America.. ''The
Prohibition'' as we call it... and what was the result of this "prohibition?"
why we still feel the effects of this decades after the end of "prohibition"
in terms of gangs, in terms of laws, in terms of how we understand
alcohol use in America... the fact is that the "prohibition" was a total
failure in light of what it was trying to do... it didn't end drinking, but in
fact increased it all over America and it brought about some
consequences that we still feel today...so, tell me how ending "Roe vs Wade"
will bring about the actions that one desires? which is to end abortions forever...
it is in fact an "ad hoc" solution to a problem that isn't even a problem...
it is a solution to a reality that doesn't exist...

let us look at another "problem" this conservative belief that
"All men are evil" that we are born in sin and guilt...
and to combat this, we need a massive police presence and
a large military... but that conservative reality or truth, is just
a mental understanding or a theory about people...and at no point,
can a conservative even prove that belief or theory..
you may as well believe in unicorns and the pot of gold at
the bottom of a rainbow... those two beliefs, in man being evil
and in unicorns have the exact same grounds for belief...
in some "truth" that has no connection to reality......

and so in regard to a bans or prohibitions, we have in other context,
conservatives arguing against a prohibition depending on whether
they are for or against it... for example in regard to gun control,
conservatives argue against gun control/ prohibitions against gun
ban because they say, it won't work... you have two different realities,
one of which is abortions is evil and must be banned and guns control,
which cannot be banned because it won't work... and the fact is,
gun violence is the leading cause of death for children...where is the
conservative outrage? They clearly have no problem with this ''truth'',
so we can only conclude that their outrage is selective, ''ad hoc''

So the ''truth'' really is in the ''eye of the beholder''...
and it presents itself in terms of indoctrinations, education,
upbringing, and to be blunt, as brainwashing.... what we
believe to be ''true'' or as a part of reality, is really nothing more than
what the state, society, family, schools and church wanted us to
believe in...

so tell me, what ''truth'' do you hold, that is immutable?

and I hold that ''truth'' is nothing more than childhood training/
education...

And, here my friends, is a GREAT example of WHY it took human beings SO LONG to evolve, and PROGRESS.
