The end is not always nigh, the end may come if we get into a war with China, though.Walker wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 8:30 pm Never heard of 'em.
Step back, analyze, beginning with self.
Folks can become slave to their inherent pattern-recognition tendencies.

Let's make it clear. If it comes down to me being a slave versus preservation of the species. I am not so vile, arrogant and selfish as to place my freedom (not even my life, mind you) before the preservation of the human race.
What a short-sighted thing you are. It's not about you, Gary, or me.
It's about humanity.
A slaver state, like China, wants to leash everyone.
Best I can tell: you, to preserve humanity, would see humanity on its knees, leashed, with China's brand on everyone's keisters.

As an individual among your “we” all I can do to stop it is to say what a bad idea a war really is.
I do not have any military at my disposal that could end the war either by surrendering or by obliterating the enemy. Is there any other way for a war to stop?

I mean, we collectively as a country, that includes our leaders.commonsense wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 11:58 pmAs an individual among your “we” all I can do to stop it is to say what a bad idea a war really is.

Unfortunately, that leaves us with a big problem. Namely, that we cannot make our leaders do what we want them to.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 1:57 amI mean, we collectively as a country, that includes our leaders.commonsense wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 11:58 pmAs an individual among your “we” all I can do to stop it is to say what a bad idea a war really is.

Large institutions make large donations to leaders, who depend on advertising, which is expensive, to get elected into & remain in office.
War may be profitable for some institutions, especially if they manufacture weapons.
So, our leaders may want war when we don’t.
So, we collectively have to donate more to our leaders’ campaign funds than large corporations do if we want our opinions to be heard.

Is there any war that is not terrible?Gary Childress wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 6:13 pmIt means preventing a terrible war.henry quirk wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 5:59 pm I reckon most everyone who posts here believes he stands up for Humanity every day.
Problem is: no one agrees on what exactly standn' up for Humanity means.
Gary Childress wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 6:13 pm Work with that definition, Henry and try not to overthink it. Do you stand up for humanity now?

How do you define 'real philosopher'?
Gary Childress wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 12:32 pm The world hangs in balance as the superpowers ramp up their military might. Who here will stand up to preserve the entire world? Who here will declare their allegiance to humanity? Don't be shy.

But 'armegeddon' is for the good of humanity, and the "world" at large. So, WHY would anyone want to fight against argmageddon?Gary Childress wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 10:08 pmWould you fight armageddon if you had the opportunity to decline it?commonsense wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 9:19 pmWell I, for one, would refrain from instigating a war. Re: Don't be shy
LOL Where has this misconception that 'armageddon' is "the end of ends for everyone" coming from?Gary Childress wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 12:08 amWhy fight armageddon at all? It's a lose/lose scenario for everyone. You know you're going to lose going into it. But you don't know what not fighting it will yield until you find out. And there is no "too late" because Armageddon is the end of ends for everyone. So, NO, you don't fight it if it looks like armageddon. A Pascalian wager.commonsense wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 11:41 pmI’m human. I would fight Armageddon if that is where the path of least resistance takes me. I would decline if I could rely on denial so as to face no consequences.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 10:08 pm Would you fight armageddon if you had the opportunity to decline it?

Well since this is the FIRST time that you have said and expressed this, then I think you will find now many will agree with this view.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 12:17 am And does what I say make sense to anyone out there? Am I the only one who sees it plain and clear? Surely there must be someone out there who will agree that living life is better than dying for someone else's dark political motive.

Try this (an oldie): It's better to die on one's feet than live on one's knees.
That is: death as a free man is preferable to life as a slave.
Agree? Disagree?
