Don't be shy
Are there any real philosophers here today? The world hangs in balance as the superpowers ramp up their military might. Who here will stand up to preserve the entire world? Who here will declare their allegiance to humanity? Don't be shy.

No real philosophers out today? Are we all tribal now? No one wants to stand up for humanity? Come on. Step up to the plate and say, "I'm for all of humanity." Be counted, let your voice be heard. This is your time, war is a specter on the horizon, don't make it real. And if you think you can win a war, then you deserve your fate.

I reckon most everyone who posts here believes he stands up for Humanity every day.
Problem is: no one agrees on what exactly standn' up for Humanity means.

It means preventing a terrible war. Work with that definition, Henry and try not to overthink it. Do you stand up for humanity now?henry quirk wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 5:59 pm I reckon most everyone who posts here believes he stands up for Humanity every day.

Yeah, I get that.
How, Gary?
Offer some possibilities.

You haven't declared your allegiance to humanity, yet, Henry. Pledge it and don't ask any more about what I've already given.henry quirk wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 6:51 pm It means preventing a terrible war.

I would stand up and declare my allegiance to humanity if I weren’t so comfortable staying where I am. I mean I think humanity is great and all that, but somebody else should do the hard work.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 12:32 pm Are there any real philosophers here today? Let humanity speak for itself. I don’t mind thinking about my allegiance, but to put that into words is just too much.
You see, it’s all a matter of resources and energy. If I were to stand up and cheer out loud for everything I believe in, there would be no time left for rest and recreation.
Let my support be a page from my checkbook, that is if I have envelope and stamp conveniently on hand.
Besides all that, it would be far more dangerous to speak up for humanity than not. I mean that anyone with any grudge against humanity would offend me,
And that may require action, or at least some thought about action.
No, I’ll happily watch from the sidelines in comfort and convenience.

Well I, for one, would refrain from instigating a war. To that much I can commit.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 6:13 pmIt means preventing a terrible war. Would you fight armageddon if you had the opportunity to decline it?commonsense wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 9:19 pmWell I, for one, would refrain from instigating a war. I’m human. I would fight Armageddon if that is where the path of least resistance takes me. I would decline if I could rely on denial so as to face no consequences.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 10:08 pm Would you fight armageddon if you had the opportunity to decline it?

Re: Don't be shy
Why fight armageddon at all? It's a lose/lose scenario for everyone. You know you're going to lose going into it. But you don't know what not fighting it will yield until you find out. And there is no "too late" because Armageddon is the end of ends for everyone. So, NO, you don't fight it if it looks like armageddon. A Pascalian wager.commonsense wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 11:41 pmI’m human. I would fight Armageddon if that is where the path of least resistance takes me. And does what I say make sense to anyone out there? Am I the only one who sees it plain and clear? Surely there must be someone out there who will agree that living life is better than dying for someone else's dark political motive.
