Ethics and Culture
What may be an MP has recently spoken of how she or he views ‘patriotism’ or being British. The unfortunate and dangerous mistake made is to confuse the ethics in control of culture and indeed the economy, with culture itself. Whether or not this country is ‘open’ is an ethical decision regarding how we protect culture. If this country and others are all ‘open’ on a globalised basis, then the only culture that can survive is a globalised mish-mash. There is an alternative, and very problematical, and that is multiculturalism – in the way that Judaism and Jews survived over two thousand years. That is to say closed communities within nations which are based merely on the economy or service to the government. Apart from a world in chaos, we may be like China. Or if we choose ‘democracy’ then we can have an economy and society [much like Texas by repute] based on rank capitalism. Or an altruist society in which the community has control for mutual benefit. Every nation should have genuine patriotism, as against jingoism or globalised individualism. When we have all the goods we essentially need what is left but culture and human diversity – and natural diversity. At present we are moving to non-culture and virtual reality.
