Why Take the Leap into La La Land?

Post by Veritas Aequitas »

From 'No Man's Land' to 'La La Land'
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=31341

In the above post, I quoted Russell,

Bertrand Russell wrote:All definite knowledge – so I should contend – belongs to science;
all dogma as to what surpasses definite knowledge belongs to theology.

... between theology and science there is a No Man’s Land, exposed to attack from both sides; and this No Man’s Land is philosophy.
In the above case, theists take big leap from the world of definite knowledge [empirical] over the No Man’s Land over to the dogma and non-empirical related speculations la la land.

In la la land, theists and speculators of the likes can make metaphysical, ontological claims and whatever claims without the need for verification and justifications like the scientific method.

What they did is merely to take a very big leap of faith into la la land and insist whatever they claim is real, more real than scientific knowledge - the standard bearer of truth of reality.

Questions:
What drive these speculators to take that leap across the No Man's Land to la la land?

What is there to benefit them or humanity for taking that leap of faith?

  • Definition of dogma
1a: something held as an established opinion
especially : a definite authoritative tenet

1b: a code of such tenets
    pedagogical dogma

1c: a point of view or tenet put forth as authoritative without adequate grounds

2: a doctrine or body of doctrines concerning faith or morals formally stated and authoritatively proclaimed by a church
The relevant meaning of dogma for the OP is 1c,
1c: a point of view or tenet put forth as authoritative without adequate grounds
which is extended to theistic beliefs and other ungrounded & unjustified beliefs.

And Google says: "a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true."

Apparently what necessitates "adequate grounds" is subject to dogma given not only is the definition subject to an authority but there are multiple authorities from which this definition is derived.

All mindsets, as dependent upon assumed axioms, are dogmatic.

"What drive these speculators to take that leap across the No Man's Land to la la land?"

The emptiness of human observation as a thing in itself.

"What is there to benefit them or humanity for taking that leap of faith?"

Faith is inevitable given nothing can be proven in its totality.
