Do we hate our benefector ?

In the novel Avenger a CIA man wants to know why so many people hate the US. A British spy explains to him: because they hate people who help them.
They cannot forgive the US that they are rich and powerful and thus able to help.

So the motive behind the hate is mainly envy.

Do you agree ?

A possible contradiction: the main character is a benefector to a lot of people and they are eager to help him back one day when he needs them. So they don´t hate their benefector.
