The Drone, and AI.
It is impossible to discuss ethical values and codes of ethics or law without first defining the alternative forms of society that are involved. Appealing to ‘god’ is an appeal to arbitrary rule, unless it asked on what value basis the ‘rules’ or codes of conduct are based – indeed ‘god’ may well be mother nature.
Modern technology is bringing this into sharp focus.
An authoritarian state, not to say tyranny, may well welcome all new technology. On the basis that the state will control it for its own purpose in holding the population in thrall. The populace may well be compliant in worship of the state’s ‘god’.
For anarchistic society, it is the individual who decides what he wants and should have. Personal demand is all. The result will be that anything that can appeal to a substantial minority then becomes a part of life for that society, and at an early stage so embedded in the overall economy and social intercourse that it must be accepted by all. There is no control on insatiable demand and population growth, and the result is what we have before us today environmentally.
For altruist democracy, the good of society is that of a corporate society, and the relationship between societies from the grass roots upwards. It is necessary to decide what is acceptable, before it happens, or while in its development and testing. Getting it wrong, is a risk. The fact that we have no mechanism for social decisions that do not involve representative government, is simply the consequence of inevitable imperfection.
Democracy based on popular elections in which the winner takes all, is dangerous, if first the shape of Democracy itself has not been decided, so that minority anarchists and tyrants may not change democracy to their own image.
