Is competition the best way to improve?

All types of competition: between individuals, companies, countries, etc. Appears to be the best way to make progress. Do you agree?

It could be that the progress people are right insofar as Aubrey de Grey solves the Death Problem. After much fierce and direct competition fueled the world for several centuries. Which seems like a profound boon. So far as I understand these extreme objections, it is not clear that things will be slightly better, or the same, in the general sense of the mood in which one registers one's undying existence. But, it might be.
