SIR Roger Scruton

Post by tbieter »

“Nothing upset me more than the award of Companion of Honour to Eric Hobsbawm in reward for a lifetime of unswerving loyalty to the Soviet Union” rued Roger Scruton, about the time in England “when honours and praise go only to people on the Left.” 20 years later, Scruton has been knighted on the Queen’s 90th birthday “for (his) significant impact on thinking about national identity, freedom and Western values.”

Regarding the vote on June 23 on whether Britain should leave the EU, Sir Roger is vigorously in favor of leaving.

What a grotty bell end that man is. Hobsbawm was a brilliant historian, admired by left and right alike.
He should be stripped of his knighthood immediately, the scoundrel.

He is also vigorously in favour of fox-hunting.

' Nothing upset me more...' - Really?
Poor diddums.
But he's fixed it now. All is well in Scrutonland.

It looks Europe which includes the UK will be in for a major face lift trending back to where it used to be without being the same as it was.

As a noted philosophical author there is no one in literature who deserves it more.

Congrats Sir Roger !!!

The fact that the mere mention of Scruton seems to give you an erection is probably resulting in a little bias on your part.

Fittingly, since tomorrow you folks will vote in the referendum on the EU, this morning I finished reading Sir Roger's wonderful book, England: An Elegy.
The passing of the English way of life described by Scruton is the effect of the departure from following the principle of subsidiarity, which is the ultimate democratic principle. Instead of local rule under the common law, you will be ruled by law and regulation issued out of Brussels. But, apparently that is what the ordinary Brit now wants.

You can't depend an an "ordinary" anything to make extraordinary decisions which require a lot of data to make. The polls prior to the assassination of Jo Cox were in favor of leaving. After the event the polls started to reverse more toward the stay side. Her death was tragic but it doesn't change a thing in regard to staying or leaving. Those who changed their minds based on this travesty did so for purely sentimental reasons with no further consideration of how important it is to try to make the right decision based on fundamentals of which there are many.

Nigel Farage made some very direct remarks regarding the EU mostly in the context of France and Germany not often made so explicit by politicians. Personally, I agree with him completely.
