I am from Manchester and would me interested in a meet-up, if any one else is.

Perhaps we could discuss some articles from Philosophy Now Magazine.

As Socrates said "You cannot ask a book a question". I agree with him that live discussion is essential in Philosophy.

Happy New Year to everyone.

I'm in Holmfirth and up for local meetings. I don't travel far if I can help it but If anyone wants to meet locally I can find a venue.

How about Sid's cafe? I'll come in my wellingtons (no sexual innuendo intended).

Time stands still in Holmfirth, VT, dates mean nothing there.

12 years is a long time to wait for a 'philosophical discussion'.

But surely everyone will be older and wiser now.

Quite. Twelve years elsewhere is three minutes in Holmfirth. We're on Kantian time here and the Parish Council decides how fast it should run.

Sid's cafe sound practical.

One more instance where Socrates was dead wrong. Yes, you can ask a book a question. I do it quite often. It's fun, actually. I put "The Republic" on the table, and provoke it. "Whose mother? Say it now, if you dare: Whose mother did you see shoplifting Software on the Internet?" Then I beat it up.

The common mistake is made usually when people expect a direct reply.

I'm wondering if it's worth making an effort to do this. It could be a real damp squib but could also be fun. What do folks think?

I think after twelve years of precisely no activity my money is definitely on the real damp squib
Also Number One lives in Canada if memory serves so dont expect him to turn up any time soon

We have a Philosophy Circle or something here in London, Canada, every last Monday of the month. It is attended by 30 men and once in a while a stray woman wanders in. They wander out halfway through the meeting. Some make a half-titted attempt in a very low voice at an apology or excuse why they have to run, some others scream and tear their hair out as they exit. We, men, are generally over 60, and the average age is 78. The affair is incredible damp squib. A pithy. A piff-puff. A pittance of a meagre maladjusted mindful of crappola. The problem is I can't fall asleep, because the seats are uncomfortable. This is the only thing that separates our meetings from perfection.
