Now, if you cite the most common text, the Judeo-Christian text, in any of its versions, great or small, then you will find that it repeatedly tells the reader that it is sealed to man's understanding until a particular time in human history, and even quite plainly, that mankind cannot even read it, i.e. mankind is illiterate.
What exactly do you imagine literacy is?
