How to deal with a friend who thinks COVID 19 is a hoax

For philosophical reflections on the COVID-19 pandemic. How can philosophy help us to understand it, to combat it and to survive it?

According to the Mayo Clinic (who is smarter than Henry), wearing a mask helps slow the spread of the virus:

Here's another article by Snopes.com internet fact-checking site:

And more fact-checking is available on PolitiFact, including this misinformation on Facebook:

here's a bullshit objection I hear often: if masks don't help why do surgeons wear 'em?

surgeons wear 'em to keep saliva out of opened cavities, not to prevent transmission of viri (though, it is believed, surgical masks may reduce the transmission of of some bacteria)

if a surgeon has beer virus, the flu, or just an average cold, they don't operate (cuz a friggin' surgical mask will not, can not, protect the patient)

maskin' against viral transmission is dumb, unjustified, and is solely an exercise in feel-goodism, or virtue signalin' or control

maskin' is malarky

g'night, forum

OK. So who should we believe, the CDC and WHO or this doctor blowing smoke from a vape?

https://www.who.int/emergencies/disease ... -use-masks

It reminds me of the Senator who brought a snowball into the Senate chamber to demonstrate to the other Senators that Global Warming is a hoax.

Well, if you and I are wrong about this, then the worst outcome is we all got masks and didn't need them. OK. Some money blown down the tubes. If Henry is wrong, he's instigating practices that perpetuate the spread of a virus pandemic. I''m willing to say that it could be that masks won't help. I have yet to see Henry post that masks may be effective. But I guess stranger things have happened than Henry admitting he could possibly be wrong. So maybe there's hope yet.

LIterally, it's like talking to a brick wall. Nope, no possiblity of error by Henry Quirk. No possiblity whatsoever. Masks aren't the least bit effective in any way whatsover. Dr. Vape on Youtube says it, so the CDC, WHO, Mayo Clinic and everyone else must be wrong. Why he blew smoke through a mask. That's incontrovertible evidence right there.

Did you read this reply to your New England Journal of Medicine article?
We understand that some people are citing our Perspective article (published on April 1 at NEJM.org)1 as support for discrediting widespread masking. In truth, the intent of our article was to push for more masking, not less. It is apparent that many people with SARS-CoV-2 infection are asymptomatic or presymptomatic yet highly contagious and that these people account for a substantial fraction of all transmissions.2,3 Universal masking helps to prevent such people from spreading virus-laden secretions, whether they recognize that they are infected or not.4

Let me guess, Henry. It doesn't matter. By God, Henry knows...

Yep!

I'm willing to wear a mask to protect and show respect for the lives of others (in case I might unknowingly transmit something), as well as taking a small measure to protect myself. It's very likely just a phase, and it's not that big of a deal. If there's any question at all, why not take a precaution that could save someone's life?

I read the material of every link I post

it matters, but addendum, especially a statement of intent, doesn't alter the content of the piece itself

read it again

From the article you posted: "First and foremost, a mask is a core component of the personal protective equipment (PPE) clinicians need when caring for symptomatic patients with respiratory viral infections."

This does not support your claim that surgeons only wear masks to avoid drooling into open body cavities.

Do YOU read information from reputable sources that conflicts with your current view, just to honorably ensure that you have a balanced perspective and the latest information?

Or do you only read what appears to support your chosen rigid position? Do you think that a quantity of malignant jackass links outweigh the quality of information from a number of more credible sources?

Question for Henry

Post by Lacewing »

If you or a loved one tested positive for Covid19, and you were told by your doctor to wear a mask when you were around them... would you?
