Thank you for the cogently illuminating article. After reading it a few times, I finally recognize the relevance of your conclusion for our troublesome times. As you said, “What emerges from both Hegel and Heidegger is the importance of constant reassessment and revision to one’s beliefs.” And farther down, “Although Heidegger doesn’t explicitly say so, it seems his process of preconception-evaluation would indeed also be more fruitful with the engagement of others.”
It seems to me that current times call for just that, a process of preconception-evaluation whereby we expose ourselves—our consciousness—to ‘foreign’ interpretations and seek a broader understanding of ourselves and others. I’m a naive undergraduate student, but I do believe that in many ways this is the first, necessary step toward a more relaxed and friendly society.
