Re: Chaos & An Unpredictable Tomorrow
One thing the author didn't consider in his article is that chaos is also caused by entropy. Entropy can and does bring on chaos and disorder to our lives big time. And this chaos is highly predictable, which for the most part we foresee and organize to minimize its effects.

Re: Chaos & An Unpredictable Tomorrow
The author appears not to have heard of strange attractors and the dampening effect of feedback?
Re: Chaos & An Unpredictable Tomorrow
I have been thinking about a possible connection between Chaos and Pragmatism. Does Pragmatism temper and harness Chaos' influence on unpredictability?
For instance, Donald Trump has brought a chaos and unpredictability to the Republican party, as well as to the political discord of America. In the end, will a pragmatism prevail and bring a common sense to the proceedings and workings of America? My hunch is yes!

Re: Chaos & An Unpredictable Tomorrow
Jed Bush said if Donald Trump was elected he would be the 'chaos president'.
Judging by Trump's behaviour and pronouncements if elected he would be the most unpredictable president ever.

What if this is as good as it gets?
Re: Chaos & An Unpredictable Tomorrow
Recently we have had a ringside seat to Chaos & An Unpredictable Tomorrow. It was supplied by the coup in Turkey.
The coup generated chaos in the lives of million of Turkish citizens. It compounded the chaos and unpredictability that had been building up for the last couple of years, this time with the arrest of people from all walks of life, including the arrest of intellectuals, educators, judges and journalists. Nobody knows what to expect next.
But not everything about chaos is unpredictable. With certain kind of chaos, like that occurring in Turkey, there is a built-in predictability. What is predictable is that it's not good for business or the economy. Business does not like instability, which this chaos is bringing. Tourism, a big sector of the Turkish economy that employs millions of people, is suffering badly. International and domestic investments have dropped significantly. The overall mode of the nation is way down, dampening the dynamism that for many years had propelled Turkey to new heights. At the moment all that is at risk.

Re: Chaos & An Unpredictable Tomorrow
"Hence, chaos theory implies that the future is not predictable based on past events, as it used to be thought to be."
I think we have captured and tamed the occurrence of chaos in the world to our advantage and made things pretty predictable.
However, there are those who have tried to find and define a chaos in the world to create their own narrative of predictability. There are those who predicted a population explosion that would reek havoc with the world, that we would run out of food. And there are those who also predicted the occurrence of 'peek oil' years ago, which hasn't happened as predicted. Instead of those so-called scary predictions of chaos doing us asunder as predicted, they have instead mobilized us to find alternative ways of carrying on.
The author of the article gives the impression that chaos will be the ruin of us. But I think that chaos, like failure, in the long run strengthens us.

This isn't quite right I think as the problem is we can't get the figures from the major oil producers.spike wrote:... And there are those who also predicted the occurrence of 'peek oil' years ago, which hasn't happened as predicted. ...

The thing is, not to put too fine a point on it, we have not or will in the foreseeable future run out of energy as many have predicted.Arising_uk wrote:This isn't quite right I think as the problem is we can't get the figures from the major oil producers.spike wrote:... Well we might not run out of energy but we'll certainly run out of Oil if we last long enough.spike wrote:The thing is, not to put too fine a point on it, we have not or will in the foreseeable future run out of energy as many have predicted.
Re: Chaos & An Unpredictable Tomorrow
For those who don't move on beyond their own point of reference the world can be quite an unsettling and unpredictable place.
