Hey gaffo. There are two powerful and similar scenes, one in Shindler’s List and the other in Slumdog Millionaire. In both films a child voluntarily leaps and submerges into a cess pool, sunk into the metaphorical filth of humanity. In both films each child emerges to his respective destiny.

I wouldn’t be surprised if both movies didn’t borrow the powerful image from the same scene in Kozinski’s The Painted Bird. Stephen King may even have borrowed it for Shawshank (“I hope, I hope”) although Kozinski’s character was thrown into a filth not of his choosing, rather than jumping in like those other three.

Kozinski is one of those authors I read as he was published. The end of his life is interesting. He chose death because he could no longer write, which obviously made the act of writing the most precious thing to him in particular, although not in principle.

His dark humour was in later works such as Cockpit, which as I recall is his novel that describes a successful strategy for defection from a Communist block country, that relied on the tunnel vision of the bureaucrats.

thanks for reply Walker - i ran accross this YT channel from an Ausie that sems to have good taste in film and knowledge - esp like top 10 1950's crim movie.

https://www.youtube.com/c/TerryFrost/videos

so many movis i've not yt viewed nor know about - i'm talking notes though ;-) - i do know a shit-ton of movie - but as they say "the more you know the more you know you do not know" - so more sutff out there I know noting about - hense my note taking per "terry" - who knows more than me and seems to have pretty good taste.

--------------------

have you seen"Come and See"? - i first heard of it about a year ago - in the last 6 months it has a Criterion bluray releas - from my understanding it is break as hell (as it should be if its about Germans invading and liquifying bellow rusians as subhumans - as they of coure did in 41-43/. I've not scene it, only clips via YT sinc i first heard of it last yar. from them it look to be honest - not overy sentiemental (why i don't like Spielburg or Oliver Stone - more a kubrick guy - just show me the picts and i can make up my mind - no need to club me over the head with morality/sentimentality).

anyway thanks for relpy Walker.

since I'm here - and knowing neither of us as viewed all the movis the many directors have made (o affirming I've not viewed all of so and so dirctors movis BTW i viwed "the killing" via Pluto tv last week - Kubriick first movie -----average at best IMO - glad i had the opportunity to view it though).

what are your favorite directors? just wondring and why so.

for me

Kubrick is no 1 - he is analitical - his second movie Paths of Glory - is xcellent but overly sentimental a littl (Kudrick gt better with later movie) - its still a top 30 of all time - though Breaker Morant is better and a virtul copt of plot and theme. Is the latter a Peter Wier film? - i think it is - but not sure - Weir did of course the xcellent Galipoli and Truman show.

2nd would b a tie - ------------- I welcoem you to make me choose which is a better director - elaia Kasan (a tree grow in brooklin - his first movi - may be his bst), Babydoll (still not on bluray!), a face in the crowd - vs Syney Lumet - 12 angry men, and Fail safe - both men show perfection but if you can show one as better than the othr i welcome your view on the matter.

3rd Majid Majidi - iranian director that did "song of sparrows", "color of paradice" and "children of heaven"

4th would be J Frankenhimen -Seven Days in May fame.

5th would be the indian guy (name i can't rem now) who did the Apu Trillogy in the 1950's.

--------------------

i find no later day directors even close (outside of Magid Magidi is contemporery) to the old guys - i could include Ridly Scoot for this xcellent movis Alien, Blade Runner and my personal fav The Deulists - but his Promethius was so BAD he like Cameran with his Avatar crap - shot himlf int he foot and lost his legacy as a one of the greats - BTW Scott is a better director than Camaran - but Promethous was so bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it just remvoed him from the pantheon of th grat in my mind.

Camaran was never in that Pantheon - he was ok - some good but overall none of his movis ven without Avatar wuold alllow him in the PAntheon.

in truth Prometheous was perhaps the worst movie i've ver had the misfortue to view.- its was that bad.

your take Sir?

PS as an honourable mention Ken Loach ahs done some very good TV and movis in the 60's and 70's a brit guy.

BTW - not sure if you have heard of John Badham, but he and Lucas and Speilburg were all buddies in the late 60's early 70's - Badham was the first to become empoyed - he via TV inthe early 70's - so he "made it" bfore Lukas and Speilburg - but today is utterly forgotten - oh the irony.

anyway Badhan did th screenplay of The Neon Ceiling (an excellent movie never released on VHS nor DVD nor bluray) - like so many great films like Death be not proud - only on VHS - or like Blood Sport - with gary bussy - not on VHS even).

he directed the tv movie "the Gun" - only a bootleg "TV to vhs copy exists - i copied it via Chuck Dacon's YT channel before it was removed - then offered it on my YT channel before my channel was removed 7 yrs ago.

Badham also did the TV series "The Senator"(with Hal Bolbrook) which The Shout Factory releaseed in 2014 - and i re-encoded and uploaded to my channel (which included other shows like Callan, Gideons Way, Danger UXB, The Defenders, and the Human Jungle - all in 720 rez) - Shout factory did not like that i had the Senator and their other DVD release the 1960's The Defenders - all shows full seasons were on my channel - so thy callled up to googleauthorities and had my chanel removed.

oh well.

ya John Badham was a bad ass - check him out!

just noted it - and today the PC is utterly out of control - sadly.

lol - good clip - always like Dreyfuss, he oly spoke the truth per his perspective - sad he was driven to crazy by clousueu(sp) - one well part of why those movies are so great.

- i noted the "chinese man servant" - tdoay such a diolog would be verbotten - no cinese man would be allowed to be servant to a caucasion men.

so this movie is no longr allowed - via PC.

Dreyfus must be a white man - being a racist and male an dwhite. CLousueu must be a women - preferable a nonwhite one.

and so i await a remake - like the next bond movie (I'v tuned out on all hollywood movi 20 yrs ago due to PC garbage)_.

so the remake of Pink Panther must have a nonwhite women as clusou - lom can remain a white guy - since he is just a racist crazy - all the better to make him a white guy - to affirm the narative today.

------i'll just not boither to watch the remake when they make it ;-(.

me being a Universal Humainst that affirm the melting pot - i'll just never shell out my coin for hollwood garbage - not until they offer sothing of value taht speak to all of us - 20? yrs hense? porbably. sadly ;-/.

PC is currently stylish and the pendulum will swing, although when and how is unprovable conjecture until it actually swings.

I don't like the Mafia but I like Mafia films, especially if there is some dark humour - as is in this film.

The two characters in the clip ripped off a mafia run poker game - and they are a tad under the score.

I saw the list of actors you wrote there, so I had to watch it. Long dialogues like Tarantino popularized, balanced by the graphic violence. It centers around the Pitt character dealing with people who have self-sabotaged their situations and God-given capacities in one way or another. Pitt uses the same congenial smug persona as in Oceans 11, 12, and so on. Uses it to good effect for when he has to let the social mask slip and represent himself against his clients. I'm not sure he was convincing when the mask slipped, if it had the impact. Seems like balancing the Cool may have held him back. May watch it again for that moment of truth.

The Oz actor plays a convincing derelict.

Related to that, a lot of people who saw an early Samuel Jackson movie thought he was a crackhead hired for the part.
