Some good news for a change

Post by yiostheoy » Tue Jun 14, 2016 9:24 pm

The Russell Society awards PN Magazine with its prize in 2016.

Russell is one of my favorite philosophers mostly because of his honesty about WW1 and his courage in the face of national propaganda.

In "To End All Wars" by Hochschild there is much narrative about Russell during his WW1 protest days.

That's wonderful! Congrats to Rick!

Thankfully the Bertrand Russell Society did not see this website prior to making its determination.

No kidding, eh?

Hmmm, on a scarier note, the bit below that announcement talks of experiments on the human nervous system of twenty corpses to restart their vital processes. Christ, can't we leave the dead in peace? They've earned it.

I hate people. Don't anyone touch my dead body when I'm gone. Burn it. Quickly.

Belated but heartfelt thanks for the congratulations. I'm very grateful for the award, and if this had happened in the magazine's early years I suppose I could have claimed the credit for it but these days the mag is a real team effort. Still, that didn't inhibit me from hopping on a plane to the Bertrand Russell Society conference to accept the award:

ABOUT ME: I am a married middle-aged male, a Canadian citizen, a retired bridge engineer, a social democrat—I think that capitalism, despite its waste and obvious injustice, is infinitely preferable to real socialism with its horror of private property and its crazy faith in the incorruptability of bureaucrats and state officials—and a theist. My intellectual heroes are G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, Christopher Dawson, and, with qualifications, Bertrand Russell.

An interesting intellectual mix of heroes.

Never tell anyone your worst fears. They'll be certain to make them come true.

Dr. Who writers didn't like you much either, they always tried to make the Daleks look like bad guys.

After you are cremated, will your urn look like a salt shaker?

I especially like Steve's reaction at the end.
