He looks like a practical joker.

Why else would he do that?

Sure, but he was teasing her to get her in the mood. And he got a good uncontrollable laugh out of it at the end so she finally took off in disgust, or at least until he was done showing off. The locals say it's not a laugh, that the lion sounds spooky because he tears off arms, but he's really laughing about the savage things he does. Animal humour.

I’m confident that in time, after considering the insights and links in this thread, you will begin to glimpse lion nature with human understanding. The making of nobility. If you do and share, I’d give it some time. I'd even say it back to you in other words, for you to clarify my errors of understanding.

Here’s another nibble.

Don't humans have to anthropomorphize critters to understand them? See the animal within clearly, see the animal out there clearly.

'Anthropomorphism', ANOTHER concept that's too subtle and complex for Americans to understand.

The male is clearly sneaking up on the female--for whatever reason only he knows. Perhaps he is playing a joke on her. Perhaps he has a sense of humour. Perhaps he wants to hurt her (although I doubt that, because he's A LOT bigger than she is), perhaps he wants sex... The idiots in the car disrupted things somewhat.
Humans are animals. Just because we recognise common qualities amongst other animals does not make it 'anthropomorphising'. Many other animals are more sensitive and have deeper emotions than humans. Do you think other animals are simply hollow shells, with no feelings, no capacity for love, grief, empathy, kindness, cruelty, humour, playfulness.....? From what I've observed many human animals could fall into the 'hollow shell' category...

Other possibilities do exist.

The lion might not even know why he does anything since self-consciousness is said to be the human distinction from animals.

What appears to be knowing behavior in animal behavior may just be instinctive, inherent, complex animal behavior.

What appears to be loving, caring, nurturing behavior in animals and humans may also just be instinctive, inherent, complex animal behavior.

This means that to understand the inherent Lion, understand the objective Human.

“Instinct or innate behavior is the inherent inclination of a living organism towards a particular complex behavior. The simplest example of an instinctive behavior is a fixed action pattern (FAP), in which a very short to medium length sequence of actions, without variation, are carried out in response to a corresponding clearly defined stimulus.”

There is a school of thought that says dogs are highly evolved parasites because they instinctively do what's required to elicit love from humans.

'Self consciousness is said to be the human distinction from animals'. Care to explain what that load of shite means? It used to be 'thought' that only humans could feel pain. Only a fuckwit would claim such a thing.

Why, it's the very reason why dogs don't particularly care where they shite, although they do sniff around a bit to find the proper place wherever they are at, that is, if they aren't in too much of a hurry.

You know, some probably even see that as a job description.

Ever been to San Francisco? It’s not so much where you step there. At least in walking one can be alert for road mines. The real annoyance is the smell. Really bad, although after a few drinks aided by the onset of nose-blindness, pre-covid restaurants were somewhat tolerable. It helps to use hot sauce.

Now, SF public schools are closed but private schools are open. Why are they closed? That’s the way the unions want it. That’s the way things are there.

The bums are not the only people crapping where they live. Politicians have done it, too.

Crapping where you live also means creating disharmony where you live.
