Backward Causation/Time Travel

Post by Iwannaplato »

Before Age leads to the hijacking of Compatiblism....let's discuss reverse- or retro- or backward causation here....
A link to a small overview in philosophy is here....
https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/causation-backwards/
and time travel
https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/time-travel/
https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/time-travel-phys/

Could Age be from the future?
What would this mean? entail?

BUT NONE of 'you', adult human beings, in the days when this is being written, KNEW, consciously, what IS 'morally' Right and Wrong, in Life.
FJ: What year are you from? Have you traveled back in time?
(and good luck getting answers, Flannel Jesus. Clarification is a one way street in this case I am guessing yet, through this act of guessing, hoping that by saying this the urge to contradict me will win out over socratic torture in Age's case)

What COULD 'this' MEAN, or ENTAIL, EXACTLY?

As for time travel and/or backward causation there is a LOT 'you', people, in the days when this is being written, need to LEARN and UNDERSTAND BEFORE HOW and WHEN these can and will HAPPEN and OCCUR.

"As if ..." scoffed Esmeralda. "What do you mean as if?" Sven replied, "I have been watering the bloody plants, that rose, that tulip and whatever the hell that is". "As if ..." repeated Esmerelda, in the same disdsinful tone. Sven couldn't take it anymore, he stormed outta the room, cursing under his breath. On the third step after he'd passed through the door, on the landing, his foot caught the rubber hose, the green one, and he flew down the stairs, tumbling like ragdoll. When it was over and gravity had claimed another victim, from the door above, Sven, had he not been dead, would've heard Esmerelda's "as if".

So, someone travels back in time. Physics isn't closed to the possibility of backward causation or time travel. But what would it mean if Age is from the future. (hard to say he is claiming it, but we can go forward with it as an example). Here he is writing in a philosophy forum online. Potentially his posts could distract someone. They leave the house later. They get run over. Or they do something different and the effects reach one of Age's parents (if he hasn't been born yet, perhaps there are two Age's around in the present). Couldn't this lead to paradoxes? Or were Age's posts here from the future all along?

But then you'd think there would be signs of future influence in many places, yet we do not recognize any of them.

A lot of these people did NOT even KNOW and RECOGNIZE the True MEANING of A 'paradox'.

NOTICE how CLOSED and NARROW their views REALLY were.

LOL This makes one WONDER 'what' were they EXPECTING would be 'SIGNS', EXACTLY?

They, OBVIOUSLY, have YET to even CONSIDER what OTHER POSSIBILITIES could ACTUALLY EXIST.

And this one is SO completely and utterly CLOSED that 'it' WILL NEVER KNOW.

As WILL BE, and WAS, PROVEN True.

IF ANY one were Truly INTERESTED then ALL COULD BE and WILL BE EXPLAINED.

Well, I see that my hope to pull this topic out of the Compatiblism threads is not working.
And Flannel Jesus is now engaged with someone who often says people assume things when they should simply ask, but when you ask this person direct questions he comes back with more questions and doesn't answer. So, the little cancer in that thread is likely to grow, especially given Flannel Jesus' compassion and patience.

Sorry if this is off topic, but if you want a mind bender film of time travel check out Primer. It has a really interesting, very carefully thought out and tricky approach to it all.

Backward causality is just a mis-understanding of self-fulfilling prophecies.

There are infinitely many possible futures. There is only ever one present.

One of those possible futures is me having a beer in about 5 minutes. Backwards causality is any present action which brings about the future where I am having a beer in 5 minutes.

Backward causality is the fact that the future that happened caused itself to happen despite the infinitude of alternatives that could've happened.

Am I from the future? Of course I am. I am the change I want to see in the world.

ok, yes, I saw that. I remember it as pretty good, but not much more than that.
In fiction form, I always like Pierre Boulle's (of Planet of the Apes fame or infamy) Time out of mind, with an incredibly complicated set of time jumping and interactions.
