The Voiceless Voice

Post by Jangle »

Disclaimer: This isn't technically a philosophy book. However, for those of you who enjoy studying the philosophy of language, I think you might enjoy this book.

The Voiceless Voice by Alexandra Casavant is a collection of fictional short stories that focuses on breaking through communication barriers in order to find one's voice. The author specializes in language development, specifically language disorders, and this book takes a closer look at the kinds of difficulties individuals have to face when trying to deal with their hardships. It sounds really interesting to me and I've had it on my wishlist for a while. I figured I'd share it with you all!

I'm not getting it either. Think there's a language barrier involved.

You know, the day destroys the night.
Night divides the day.
Try to run! try to hide!

Break on through to the other side!

You know, I chased on prayers here...
Dug out treasures there.
Can you still recall... time to time

Break on through to the other side!

etc.

... and in the naked (haha... she said "naked") light I saw
Ten thousand people maybe more
People talking without speaking
People smelling with that odorless thing
People writing songs... that voices never share
No one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.

Fools, said I you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might reach you
Hear my words that I might teach you
But the words... like silent raindrops fell
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.

I am about to get my Ph.D. in the interdisciplinary field of Science & Technology Studies. This book is a foundational text for the discipline. Yes, the term paradigm here and for Kuhn, really extends beyond "science."
