The End is Nigh

Can philosophers help resolve the real problems that people have in their lives?

And yet apparently it's led you to the conclusion that you will or are repeating your life?

Is it that you are repeating your life or that you will be repeating your life?

We repeat our lives over & over again.

I think that we can become more self-conscious and in that way perhaps change in a small way.

It's not repetition if it changes though.

Yes, to a degree, you are correct.

You have a philosophical problem here Bill.

Either we repeat our lives or we don't. If we do then there is no "change in a small way". If there is a "change in a small way" then we are not repeating our lives.

The best you can hope for is that this is your first time around of the repeating, that way what you do now will be what you do forever. This is why I asked what happened that made you think we repeat our lives. As if it was that you thought you'd done this before then you are not on the first loop and as such nothing you do will be of much point as you've already done it.

Personally, this is what I thought when thinking about Nietzsche's Eternal Recurrence, even though his thought did give me the biggest belly-laugh I'd had from Philosophy.

No. There is no problem.

You are trying to understand what I have told you in an intellectual way.

That's fine. That is all you have.

You can't understand what I went through. You can't begin. You can't take the first step.

And that's fine.

There is no way that I wish to attempt to explain.

It's not important that you understand to a greater degree.

We repeat our lives over & over again.

I think that we can become more self-conscious and in that way perhaps change in a small way.

But there is great effort involved.

Potent philosophers must be affected in their youth...

No, I'm trying to understand it in a philosophical way. As such there is a serious problem with your thoughts about what happened to you.
That's fine. That is all you have. ...
It appears sufficient for my life.
You can't understand what I went through. You can't begin. You can't take the first step. ...
Given you can't say what happened to you I'd say that it is you who shows the lack of understanding.

Given you can't say what happened to you I'm not surprised I have no chance to take the first step.
And that's fine.

There is no way that I wish to attempt to explain.
Mainly, I suspect, because you cannot.
It's not important that you understand to a greater degree.
Fair enough.
We repeat our lives over & over again.

And this is why you are not and never will be a philosopher, potent or otherwise. At least until you manage to deal with the logical contradictions in your conclusions of your understanding of what happened to you. As if you can change in small ways then you won't be repeating your life over and over again. Go away and read some philosophy. Try Nietzsche, he'll ream your brain out but watch out for the depression.

Barring that, try answering the question of whether you think you're at the beginning of the loop or actually on it?

Thank you for trying...

I know it must be frustrating for you.

All I can say is that you are trying to touch a deep understanding, a deep philosophical experience with your intellect.

You can't do it.

I'm not putting you down.

I appreciate your efforts.

I think you should put it down for a while.

You are trying to bit off more than you can chew.

Save your platitudes as it's apparent they are meaningless.
I know it must be frustrating for you.
How would you know this?
All I can say is that you are trying to touch a deep understanding, a deep philosophical experience with your intellect.
I think you mean a 'deep' 'religious' or 'spiritual' experience, as a philosophical one would involve the intellect. You fail to understand that an experience is how you deal with what happens to you, not what happens to you.
You can't do it.
I not attempting to. I'm attempting to discover if you have a deep understanding of what happened to you.
I'm not putting you down.
Of course you are.
I appreciate your efforts.

I think you should put it down for a while.
Save your platitudes for those who give a shit.
You are trying to bit off more than you can chew.
I think you should learn to swallow more.

*Yawn* So you keep repeating.

Does it not bother you that you claim to be a philosopher but cannot explain yourself?

Does it not trouble you that you hold a belief with an obvious philosophical problem?

Does it not worry you that you claim the title philosopher yet cannot converse?

Please save your platitudes when conversing with me in future, I'd prefer an answer or silence from you.

As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.

I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.

Yeah, but according to Plato he knew how to ask questions that allowed him to find out what he didn't know.

Whereas you just think not knowing is a good.

I don't know what your experience was that led you to your conclusion, however, my own experience tells me that there is no life after death. Unless this is my first life, I don't remember any prior lives. I expect to return to my former state of oblivion once I die. It would be nice to think that my life will repeat itself (unless of course my following lives will be horrible or something).

I will say this much. I have had psychotic episodes in which I was convinced that life would go on indefinitely but I see those now as "psychotic" episodes, not as actually revealing a truth. Are you sure that your "experience" which led you to the conclusion that there is reincarnation, or whatever, was not a moment of psychosis? :?
