confidence v competence
The best leaders do not inspire confidence in others because the kinds of things that inspire confidence in others are not the kind of things a good leader exemplifies. I'm speaking of rhetoric, humility, and deal-making compromises, for example. Yes, each of those has it's place. I said exemplifies, but the point is larger than that technically accurate one. Good leaders in popular opinion are bounded by the counter-productive necessity of being actively integrated in the current system, which is rarely a great breeding ground for great ideas. The best leaders can only be known by their potential, not their pragmatic success.
