If one must believe, something else would be preferable to an old and obvious outworn historical fiction.
Gary Childress wrote: Wed May 27, 2020 11:07 pmThe science of "evolution" seems pretty solid so I don't think the Genesis creation story is viable anymore but perhaps there is a different sort of supreme, divine being?
To actually know if there is such a being or beings is not possible; it can only be measured on an index of probability which nevertheless remains red-hot that there are no such entities existing by the simple fact that nothing ever external to scripture confirmed it. Knowing what we NOW know leads to disbelief or atheism which is nothing more than a justified renouncement of the underpinnings of theism. But even atheism, as subject to its own logic, has no claim or means to know absolutely.

That sentiment depends wholly on the wishes and sensibilities of the individual. I don't interpret it that way. Nature defines every aspect of the universe in the most minute detail. From what we know on planet earth it’s a brute force of creation and destruction whose operations are thoroughly devoid of anything that can be described as justice. The forces of nature always seek to balance themselves out; but justice as equalization, in the human sense of reward and retribution, is the emptiest of empty terms in its modus. Nature, in order to create, is subject only to its own modality and nothing else. There are no Justice limitations defined within it.

As for bodily death, that’s the least problem we’ll ever encounter. For the dead time itself no-longer exists; the “deprivation” felt equals that before you were born, namely none since the dead cannot know they ever lived. No one ever said, blimey! It sure took a helluva time getting here!

As a matter of experienced fact the universe is a very desolate and lonely place. It's mens' task to make the universe better than it has been. Many men succeed in this without recourse to drugs, superstitions, or arrogant narcissism.

There is no "ultimate justice". Justice is what we make it. Any continuation of being after death is eternal being i.e. timeless being. Timeless being is the same as changeless being.

Don't knock em till you tried em.
For some people, that is all they have, or could ever had.

Interesting. I didn't know Murdoch studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford. Also now married to 4th wife Jerry Hall, of Mick Jagger/Bryan Ferry fame. The guy really gets around. Also interesting that Murdoch kept a bust of Lenin in his room at Oxford and was known as "Red Rupert"? Pretty amazing stuff. The people's commissar.

You can make the same excuse for people who cling to superstitious versions of Christianity.

If true that he kept a bust of Lenin, it is no indication of his current political leanings. Obviously a teenage romantic view was replaced by a keen sense of self-interest.
I do not see Lenin surviving the ideological storm of shutting down a newpaper to kill the unions.

I've heard some bad stuff about Lenin from anarcho-socialists, that he essentially betrayed the workers by undermining the independent worker soviets that sprang up during the revolution when the bolsheviks seized control and centralized control of production. I think they call Lenin's brand of politics "state-capitalism". Instead of private tycoons running industry, it was political tycoons. And then Stalin and Hitler were birds of a feather. I don't know that there's a whole lot of difference between the Murdochs and other such powerful people who have the excessive means and think they have the master plan that will make the world a better place. Murdoch might even be a nice guy on a personal level with his friends.

Thank you for your mindless American indoctrination.
I've also heard that Marx was cruel to his children, but that is just the sort of thing that Soldiers conscripted to Vietnam want to hear.

So I take it you're a fan of Lenin and Marx? Hopefully, you at least draw a line at Stalin?

I definitely draw the line with Stalin. I'd not call myself a fan of Marx, but he was an expert economic theorist, and certainly give a damn about the exploitation of the poor and their suffering. Defending him is easy since there is so much dysinformation and slander about him. Lenin is more tricky. People who might wish to do good find themselves in the thick of it, and end up doing bad things.
You can't make omelettes without breaking feudal aristocratic eggs, and they were tuff to crack, since the west conspired against the Russian people to foil the revolution. He's a Walter White of socialism.

So I take it you disagree with Noam Chomsky's analysis of Lenin? See this video from one of Chomsky's talks:
