Meh, the internet has been destroyed about 15 times if you believe the shrieking people do every time anything happens. Here's a short list of things that are or were definitely going to destroy the internet: GDPR, the DMCA, DRM, Goatse, Internet Explorer, AOL, Net Neutrality (introduction of), lemonparty, Google's ad monopoly, Apple's mobile monopsony, Facebook's ad monopoly, Facebook's mobile monopsony, Net Neutrality (cancellation of), the Right to be Forgotten... and other stuff that escapes my recollection right now.

I hope you're right, Flash, cuz it's that kinda nonsense that floats across the pond and winds up here, in Amur'ca

I don't know, the big social media sites like facebook and youtube tend to be pretty good at being region specific. They're not going to implement a very restrictive regulation of another country, into a region of the site that doesn't require it.

What I'm getting at, is if someone in the EU wanted to bypass all this, they would just need to set up a proxy and connect to facebook or youtube's US servers.

They won't have to. Here, we got folks advocatin' for all manner of legislated restrictions to be applied to the net (in access, in content). None of these folks, or their ideas, have had much traction yet. Tomorrow? We'll see.

Then use a proxy to connect to another server of the website that doesn't follow the rules of this copyright crap. And if they decide to take it site-wide, they will be signing their own death sentence that will usher in a new line of social media sites.

How many of them have workarounds, though? The truth is, we have more internet freedom now than ever before, and the government has very little to do with that.

Today: you're right.

Tomorrow?

As I say: we'll see.

'May you live in interesting times' is the curse, yeah?
